Recommendations for India Country Office (ICO) Follow-Up: Media for, about and with Children

Author

by Barbara Kolucki

Delhi

August 2002

Summary

Abstract

The author, who is associated with UNICEF, met with the management and production staff of both Doordarshan and private media production houses to review their productions focussed on integrated early childhood development (IECD) and to assess related needs for training and capacity building. Participants at this meeting concluded that these productions emphasised the problem rather than the solution, leaving children with nothing that was "empowering, playful and solution-oriented". In response, Kolucki called on Annie Evans, an Emmy-award-winning scriptwriter for Sesame Street and other USA children's television programmes, to help her conduct a six-day workshop in August 2002 in Pune, Dehli. The workshop was designed to help develop media content that is developmentally appropriate and inclusive of all children, as well as to provide examples of how this content could be translated to the CRC, MTSP and UNICEF programme communication.

The following strategies were suggested as follow-up actions to this workshop:

  • "Innovative National ICDB Production for and with children...
  • "In-house UNICEF orientation...
  • "IECD as the starting point for innovative programme communication for, about and with children...
  • "Capacity Building Workshops on Direction and Puppetry...
  • "Funding Proposal on Media for and with Children...
  • "Orientation and Training for Media Management as well as technical crews...
  • "Development of a Training (TOT) Module for FTII [Film and Television Institute of India] and others...
  • "Production and distribution of a Writers/Producers Notebook...
  • "Multi-media programme communications for/with/about children...
  • "Advocacy and training with the Film Industry..."
  • "Collaboration with PSBT [The Public Service Broadcasting Trust]...
  • "National Task Force on Media for, with and about children...
  • "Special MOU [Memorandum of Understanding] on Media Production and Broadcast/Distribution...
