Integrated Early Childhood Development in Uganda using an Appreciative ApproachCountryUganda RegionGlobal, Africa Programme SummaryThis programme, initiated by UNICEF and the Republic of Uganda, involves developing cost-effective family, home, and community-based strategies for Integrated Early Childhood Development (IECD). The Project initially started in the Masaka District and has since expanded to the Kasese and Mbarara Districts. Communication StrategiesThe project helps communities identify and search for strengths that hold the potential for positive and sustainable change. The central tool is Appreciative Inquiry (AI), a way of looking at the world that acknowledges the fact that different people look at the world in different ways. AI builds upon the notion that communities can resolve their own difficulties with their own resources and expertise so to create sustainable change. Selection criteria was agreed upon at an inter-district regional meeting. Development IssuesEarly Childhood Development, Children. Key PointsThe AI mindset draws on the idea that "brave attempts, partial achievements, and a sequence of possibilities can yield rich rewards". AI was selected because of its potential to draw from positive community experience in best practice development and its consistency with the Human Rights Approach Programming Framework. AI is "a highly flexible tool" that acknowledges that there is no right or wrong way to do AI. "Normal" AI uses the steps of discovery, dream, design and delivery to involve the community, draw constructive knowledge and experiences, and encourage and enable positive action.
