Key Points

Presse Jeune retains a consistent focus on the issue of AIDS in youth media. It aims to recognise, and to help others recognise the Nigerian media as an important stakeholder in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Among other activities, members participated in the election of the youth network against AIDS in Cameroon. They also organised the International Conference of Youths' Media on AIDS in Cameroon; youth from 15 countries participated. Presse Jeune planned and conducted a recognition ceremony in March, 2001 to reward Cameroonian journalists who have taken steps to make people more aware of suffering and loss due to HIV/AIDS. The health minister of Cameroon and the executive deputy director of UNAIDS were present at this ceremony. Three prizes were awarded to young journalists, five to print media journalists, and two to women in the media. Another ceremony was scheduled for February, 2002.

For these and other efforts, Presse Jeune was rewarded with the World Youth Award of the UN
