Bala Raju Nikku was born in 1970, in Budithi village, Srikakulam District in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Born in an agriculture based family gave a first hand experience of rural life and society. He had to leave the village in pursuit of higher studies that offered insights in to the urban realities. He graduated in Master of Arts in Social Work from Nagarjuna University in 1994 and secured University fifth rank. He pursued further higher education and obtained a Postgraduate Degree in Planning with specialization on Regional Planning from CEPT University, Ahmedabad in 1999. He has attended Sixth International Summer School on Management of Common Property Resources organized by Centre for Management in Agriculture, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in July 2000 and Eighth International Training Program in Environment Education (Dec 1996 -July 1997) organized by Centre for Environment Education, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, sponsored by Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) Government of India. In the year 2006 he has been awarded PhD in Social Sciences from the Wageningen University based in the Netherlands. The title of the dissertation is The Politics of Policy: Participatory Irrigation Management in Andhra Pradesh and the work has been accepted for a publication as a book by the Orient Longman publications. Dr. Nikku worked with various research, governmental, non-governmental and donor agencies in India since 1994 and from 2002 in Nepal. He worked with Tamil Nadu Resource Team based in Chennai during 1994-95. During 1995-96 worked as a sociologist with Wildlife Institute of India and during 1999-2000 worked with Gujarat Institute of Development Research as a Project Associate. He was instrumental in initiating Masters Program in Social Work (MSW) at St.Xavier’s college of Social work and Bachelors in Social Work program (BSW) at Kadambari Memorial College of Science and Management both are affiliated to Purbanchal University in the year 2005. He is also serving as a member of subject committee of Social work formed by Purbanchal University. Currently, Dr. Nikku heads the Department of Social Work at Kadambari Memorial College of Science and Management. Dr. Nikku currently serves as the member of the Editorial Advisory Board, International Journal of Disaster Resilience in the Built Environment, ISSN: 1759-5908. Dr.Nikku is an associate of Cohort 13 of LEAD INDIA. Dr. Nikku served as the convener for an international conference titled Social Development and Transition: Paths for Local-Global Partnership, organised in association with the Asia-Pacific Branch of the International Consortium for Social Development during November 26- 28, 2008. Dr. Nikku conducted research and consultancy studies with Oxfam (GB), District Water Agency, Catholic Relief Service (CRS) based in Andhra Pradesh and with the Save the Children Sweden (SCS) regional program office and UNICEF based in Kathmandu. In addition Dr. Nikku serve as the Executive Director for SUTRA Centre for Development Education and Research, a not for profit organisation based in Katmandu, Nepal. He teaches core courses of social work and current research interests include institutions, policy process, environment and international social work. Since 1994Dr. Nikku has attended and read research papers in several national and international workshops and seminars.
