Afsana Rashid Bhat is a journalist living in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir-India and author of book, “Waiting for justice: widows and half-widows”. Currently, associated with The Tribune, one of the largest circulated English newspapers in India, Afsana is also associated with New Delhi based English fortnightly, Milli Gazette and Herald of India. Afsana has been associated with number of local dailies in Jammu and Kashmir like daily Khidmat (English), daily Etalaat (English), The Kashmir Times and Kashmir Images. She has also worked with ETV News (Urdu) at Hyderabad in India as reporter/copy editor. Afsana has also worked as Research Investigator for various research projects. She has received Masters in Mass Communication and Journalism from the University of Kashmir and has also qualified NET (National Eligibility Test) in Mass Communication and Journalism in 2004. Afsana was awarded a fellowship in 2005 for her work on impact of conflict on the subsistence livelihoods of marginalized communities in Kashmir by Action Aid India. This was followed by Sanjoy Ghose Media fellowship for her work in conflict areas and Sanjoy Ghose Humanitarian Award for story writing on post-earthquake scenario during 2006-2007. She is also the recipient of UN Population Fund-Laadli Media Award for best reporting in adverse conditions on gender issues in April 2008. Afsana has been awarded for best reporting on grass-root innovations by Grass-root Innovation Augmentation Network (GIAN) North India and Bhoruka Charitable trust – Media Awards-2007. In Feb-March 2006, she went to Cardiff, London for a training programme organized by Thompson Foundation on “Conflict Reporting” and this was followed by a visit to Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2007 and then to Kathmandu in January 2009 where she took part in a workshop “Reporting Conflict” organized by PANOS-India. Afsana worked as a trainer with British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Trust in the project “Reporting Society” (2008-09) at Srinagar.
