I am currently working as Science Communication Officer at Malawi- Liverpool- Wellcome Trust(MLW). MLW is a clinical research programme that conducts clinical research on diseases of importance in Malawi and surrounding areas and is affiliated to University of Malawi, College of Medicine. With Science Communication, we strive to bring science to the people using simple language so as to help them understand clinical research better. We target a range of audiences including: Media, our own staff, Communities e.g villages and we also work with other stakeholders in the health/clinical research field to promote MLW's research agenda. We have successfully managed to create supporting structures such as Community Advisory Groups that help us communicate our research in villages using common language and simple illustrations such as dances, drama and community meetings in local language. In striving to expand our relationship with the above target audience, MLW's science communication is interested in learning new and creative ways of disseminating clinical research information so as to attract more interest on science/research issues through sharing of experiences with others from different regions(globally). Our specific areas of interest is therefore clinical research and how to further communicate it to the community as well as the media.
