I have been working in the area of creative use of expressive performing arts for engeging various publics since 1986. I began by using community theatre in political education on civic rights and law reform and gradually shifted to looking at areas of health. I worked on substance abuse, gender based rights especially reproductive health rights, family planning promotion and when HIV became a big issue in Kenya evolved into in this area. I have used community theatre, radio soap opera, comic strips and short stories, music and storytelling. I was instrumental in development of Magnet theatre a form of community theatre that has been used widely in East and Central Africa -Kenya, Uganda Tanzania, Eritrea, Ethiopia, India and United States. The form of storytelling that I have worked with a lot we christianed 'sigana' a seamless interweaving of performed narrative, percussive music, riddling, banter dance with strong interactivity and participation. I use all these elements in my current work in sensitization of communities on the issues around HIV&AIDS, STIs, TB,Malaria, FP,MCH and RH in general. In Bangalore I will be looking out for those colleagues who grapple with merging teh fcitional frame with the real frame that allows for lay people to access science in a consumable way.
