The relationship between human security and the environment is complex and highly significant. Human security is intrinsically linked to people’s access to natural resources and vulnerability to environmental change. Limited access to sanitary water supply, clean air and a non degraded land system can lead to social and economic disparities. Similarly, environmental change can have a variety of impacts ranging from health issues to economic productivity to political instability. More importantly, it is evident that environmental degradation not only effects current living patterns but its impacts are longer lasting and are felt in the generations to follow. In developing countries like Pakistan, where agriculture is the mainstay of the economy and a large portion of the population is directly dependant upon natural resources for their livelihoods, environmental conservation and judicious use of natural resources is of utmost importance. Here, state capacities are limited and allocation of resources has failed to keep pace with the growing population, leading to greater pressures on an already vulnerable ecological system. Resource capture by prominent groups has further led to ecological marginalization of already disadvantaged communities. Yet efforts to address environmental concerns and environmental conservation and management have not been regarded as a key priority. My work has shown that thus far efforts to address these concerns have remained limited to short term relief measures rather than strategies aimed at achieving long term objectives. I would like to improve my skills necessary to address problems which arise in the management of natural resources in the process of development. These skills will not only help me in my current work but will also provide me with resources for future professional pursuits in the field of environment.
