Name: Ethelmark Durant
Organisation: Ministry of Finance Economic Affairs and Energy
Role: Senior Economist
My most recent work experience is with the Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs and Energy in Barbados where I am just gaining much experience as a senior economist. One of my recent tasks was to assist in the preparation of the national strategy for the social sector, the energy sector, public finance and the tourism sector. The output of which is a multisectoral strategy represented by the Medium Term Strategic Framework. Along with the relevant sectoral analyses and recommendations, my responsibilities also extend to national statistics which are prepared for contribution to the annual Barbados Economic and Social Report and the annual Barbados Socio-Economic Data Pocket Statistics ( a project coming about through collaboration with UNDP SPARC). The responsibility of ensuring soundness, accuracy and presentation consistency has also been one of my core responsibilities with regards to these responsibilities. From this job I have gained a solid understanding of what is needed in preparing and managing both social and economic strategy and their syntheses based on the relevant statistics and statistical methods. So far in my career, I have acquired the tools and techniques which will remain very useful for application to similar circumstances existing in other agencies, such as what is now being offered by the UNDP. Apart from my work history, I have a strong educational background supporting me. In October 2006, I completed the requirements for a Master’s of Science in Economic Development Policy from the Mona Campus U.W.I, Jamaica. Importantly too, the qualitative and quantitative applications gained from my studies have proven themselves quite constructive; studies in advanced econometrics using EVIEWS and SPSS in particular. I have also recently started my pursuit of a Doctoral Certification in the area of Business Administration at the UWI Cave Hill campus. Being a good programme coordinator in an area such as poverty assessment and reduction in my opinion takes excellent analytical and communication skills, as well as strong technical and IT proficiencies. These qualities and skills are inherent in my portfolio. Moreover, of myself I can say that I am a fair, diligent, and detail oriented person who also has a good sense of humor to apply to even the most dreadful of situations. As an asset, I can speak and understand both French and Spanish with some degree of moderation.
