Household attitudes toward immunisation in Northern Nigeria

As part of its work within the USAID-funded Maternal and Child Survival Program, The CI has been coordinating a research initiative designed to support the Nigerian government and Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners in developing evidence-led strategies to leverage household demand for immunisation services in Nigeria. Together with our partners in this endeavour we are conducting a pilot study on the determinants of household attitudes toward polio vaccination and wider routine immunisation (RI) in three states of northern Nigeria. The results of this research, as well as its methodological approach, should be relevant to country- and local-level strategy formation and decision-making within the GPEI and Nigerian immunisation programmes and also for strengthening immunisation in other regions and countries where polio is still endemic or the risk of outbreak is high and, more generally, where routine immunisation coverage is low.
