During the workshop, Ebola emerged as a priority issue, and the young people, guided by facilitators, created comic strip stories around various aspects of the disease. The resulting booklet is being distributed to help raise awareness. The initiative was implemented by Africaid WhizzKids United (WKU) based on an approach developed by Cardiff University's School of English, Communication and Philosophy. </p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-long-text-1"> <div class="field-label">Communication Strategies:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Thirty young people in Ghana participated in the comic story workshop, which began with the group identifying and prioritising issues that concern them, such as Ebola and other diseases, as well as social issues such as domestic violence. The group chose to focus on Ebola, which at the time of the workshop (and of this writing) had not spread to Ghana, but is a major concern, as nearby countries such as Liberia have a high prevalence.<br /><br /></p> <p>The comic stories were created to help communicate basic information about Ebola. "In a youth friendly way and designed by the young people themselves, the comic strips will help to explain what Ebola is; how its transmitted, how to take precautions, and why there is a need for careful treatment and isolation of patients. We want to help stop the spread of Ebola by giving people the correct facts and information about the virus - before fear and ignorance can take hold."<br /><br /></p> <p>Using the original drawings, an award-winning comic strip artist, Stephen Marchant, produced a colourful booklet, which is being made available in English and French. In order to ensure the accuracy of the facts, a professor from the London School of Hygiene &amp; Tropical Medicine authenticated and reviewed the information in the booklet.<br /><br /></p> <p>The booklets are being distributed via <i>streetfootballworld</i> and FIFA Football For Hope members living in West Africa. Bring It Home" Billboard Campaign http://www.comminit.com/global/content/nalibali-story-power-bring-it-home-billboard-campaign <p>In October 2014 Nal'ibali launched a billboard campaign in South Africa to "generate awareness and discussion around the power of stories to spark all children’s potential...the campaign seeks to inspire and motivate parents and caregivers to give their children a head-start in life, by making reading and storytelling a part of daily life." Over 500 billboards have been erected, and corresponding short animated videos are being screened at taxi ranks.</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-long-text-1"> <div class="field-label">Communication Strategies:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The billboards feature illustrations drawn by Rico, an artist known for the popular South African satirical cartoon "Madam and Eve". The billboards show three different scenes demonstrating how helping children develop an interest in reading is not only enjoyable for adults and children, but can also be done with children of every age, including babies. The overall message is that reading and storytelling should happen in the home, as well as at school, to give children a solid foundation for later learning. Taglines have been translated into the predominant languages of the provinces and locations in which the billboards are found, in order for the messages to reach the widest possible population. According to Nal'ibali, "the illustrations tap into a growing body of research indicating that reading for pleasure paves a path to educational success, irrespective of social background and circumstance." <br /><bR /></p> <p>The roll-out coincides with the second season of Nal'ibali radio stories broadcast in partnership with SABC Education. The radio stories are broadcast three times a week in South Africa's 11 official languages across SABC public radio stations. The radio stories have been produced in order to reach people who may not be close to physical services, such as libraries and centre-based education. According to Nal'ibali, "radio offers the perfect platform to interact, engage, inform and effectively educate listeners in their first languages, straight into their homes."<br /> <Br /></p> <p>The billboards have also been transformed into short animated clips being aired in 10 taxi ranks across the country for a period of four months.<Br /><br /></p> <p>The campaign has also been designed to connect the public to the Nal'ibali <a href="/redirect.cgi?r=http://nalibali.org" target="_blank">Nal'ibali website</a>, <a href="/redirect.cgi?r=http://nalibali.mobi/" target="_blank">Nal'ibali mobisite</a>, <a href="/redirect.cgi?r=https://www.facebook.com/nalibaliSA" target="_blank">Nal'ibali facebook page</a>, and a weekly bilingual newspaper supplement. Nal'ibali is led by the Project for the Study of Alternative Education, Times Media, and partners.
