While political and social barriers make most opportunities for face-to-face dialogue, communication, and trust-building difficult, music knows no boundaries."</em></p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-long-text-1"> <div class="field-label">Communication Strategies:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This initiative is based on the belief that music can be a means to connect people, build trust, and inspire hope, compassion, and respect - especially modern, popular music, which "has long been the voice of change all around the world and a powerful means for youth expression and non-violent action." Music is the tool here to bring together young Jewish and Arab musicians and strengthen their voices in a context in which fights over land rights and basic recognition in the region keep the two groups strictly apart.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Heartbeat began by bringing together 12 Israeli and Palestinian high school students for a weekly musical encounter. By listening, playing, and writing music together, the students learned about each other's communities, histories, political views, identities, and hopes and developed new tools for self-expression and social change. On September 21 2008, the United Nations (UN)'s International Day of Peace, the United States (US) Consulate in Jerusalem sponsored Heartbeat Jerusalem's debut concert, which was attended by 300 Israelis, Palestinians, and internationals at the Jerusalem YMCA Theater.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Since its inception, Heartbeat has mentored 100 young musicians through retreats and camps. As of March 2014, the group has 25 members, scattered throughout major cities in Israel. Incorporating Middle Eastern traditional sounds with a pop punch, they hope to create music for a larger audience, singing in Hebrew, Arabic, and English.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Throughout the school year, a select group of Israeli and Palestinian youth musicians (ages 14-18) meet every other week to explore and create music together. According to organisers, by engaging throughout the year, students deepen their mutual understanding, build trust, and have access to numerous opportunities to amplify their voices - spreading trust across the wider community through concerts, recordings, and music videos. As described <a href="/redirect.cgi?r=http://www.heartbeat.fm/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">here</a>, the ensemble of youth artists has performed across Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Germany, and the United States (US) and in 2014 is traveling from Boston (Massachusetts) to Washington, DC for performances at universities, music venues, and congregations. To cite a specific example of an exchange event, the "Hip Hop Hunda", in May and June 2010, 16 Israeli, Palestinian, and&nbsp;German youth musician, rappers, and poets (ages 16-21) took part in an exploration of the past, present and future. Living and creating&nbsp;music together for one week in Jerusalem and one week in Berlin (Germany),&nbsp;participants of the project explored Hip-Hop and other urban art&nbsp;forms as tools for youth empowerment and social change. Their week in Jerusalem culminated with two performances. In addition, the group recorded a full album of original music, released in late 2010.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>In 2014, the group will be one of 80 organisations under the Alliance for Middle East Peace pushing to launch the International Fund of Israeli-Palestinian Peace. At a briefing at Congress (in Washington, DC, US), Heartbeat performed to promote person-to-person diplomacy and represent Israeli and Palestinian citizens' voices to Congress calling for less of an effort to fund military efforts and more focus on people-to-people programmes in creating a sustainable, peaceful, just future for that region.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-long-text-6"> <div class="field-label">Development Issues:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Youth, Conflict</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-long-text-2"> <div class="field-label">Key Points:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Israeli guitarist Guy Gefen says having Israelis and Palestinians working side by side is often viewed as controversial. "Some people get very intense around the idea. They are fearful and they think we are talking about giving rights to one side and taking them from the other." According to organisers, "[f]ear, violence, ignorance and a pervasive lack of trust define the political and cultural reality of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.&nbsp; Most Israelis and Palestinians have only encountered the other side through televised reports of extremist violence or calculating politicians.&nbsp; As violence intensifies in this small corner of the world, people retreat to their side, and are too often unable to trust in the humanity of the other.&nbsp; To break the status quo of separation and violence and to build a future of peace, security, justice, and freedom for all, people on both sides must know the other; they must communicate and understand each other's needs, fears, hopes and shared humanity.&nbsp;People on both sides must be shown tools of change more effective than violence."</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>According to Heartbeat: "Many organizations have formed with the goal of building understanding and peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Many of these organizations focus their efforts on youth....Some of these organizations have utilized specific mediums in bringing together Israeli and Palestinian youth, including basketball, soccer, creative writing, theater, film, photography and music. Until Heartbeat, Jewish-Arab youth music programs exclusively used classical music as the medium for communication and exchange. While a number of popular adult music ensembles featuring Jews and Arabs playing together have existed for years, before Heartbeat, there has never been an organized effort to bring together Jewish and Arab youth musicians through modern, popular music that youth are often most connected to."</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>"<em>Heartbeat's Vision</em><br /> Heartbeat works to help create a world where all people live freely, with safety, opportunity, dignity, and full equality.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><em>Heartbeat's Values</em><br /> Heartbeat promotes the inalienable human rights of ALL people, including the rights to freedom, equality, safety, dignity and justice. We condemn violence of absolutely any kind; physical, emotional, psychological, structural and beyond. We vehemently oppose the oppression of any group or person by another. Developing performance and communication skills through the training of Canadian Cirque de Soleil's international social circus project, children rallied the community to support a park playground facility for children with limited or different abilities.</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-long-text-1"> <div class="field-label">Communication Strategies:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Social circus is a social intervention approach based on the circus arts. In this approach, the primary goal is not to learn the circus arts, but rather "to assist with participants’ personal and social development by nurturing their self-esteem and trust in others, as well as by helping them to acquire social skills, become active citizens, express their creativity and realise their potential." The social circus project organises in a locality, works with children and young people, and then moves on to a different location, bringing with it young performers from various countries to help in training and organising for a community circus that also involves local youth, including young musicians.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>This collaborative effort in Cuenca brought together young people to learn the values of solidarity, self-esteem, pride of ownership, and achieving goals as tools for life. Under the auspices of the project, children received psycho-social support and were trained in values of self-esteem, safety, and teamwork.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>One communication technique used is the Roda, or the Circle, referring to the scheduled hour in which students and leaders of the social circus gather for a discussion on the status, successes, and problems of the circus, reflecting the right for everyone to speak, disagree, express opinions, and make contributions. The Circle's dialogue is essential to the Social Circus' paedagogical method, as it contributes to the composition of a liberal, critical, and democratic education.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The playground that was built as a result of interest in circus arts is designed as a model of equipment created for children of various abilities to play together in safety. (See video in Spanish below to observe the inauguration of the park.) Communication with families takes place through a <a href="/redirect.cgi?r=https://es-la.facebook.com/circosocialcuenca?filter=1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Facebook page</a>. It includes promotion of ongoing training for children 3 circus disciplines - juggling, aerial silk (acrobats on suspended fabric), and trapeze.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-long-text-6"> <div class="field-label">Development Issues:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Children</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-long-text-2"> <div class="field-label">Key Points:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In 2000, Cirque du Soleil, in association with circus schools and other interested partners, set up an international training programme aimed at developing the teaching skills of social circus instructors and community workers. </p><p>&nbsp;</p> <p>More than 19,000 children and young people worldwide of low resources that live on the streets or live with the risk of becoming homeless have been involved in this project of Cirque du Soleil. </p><p>&nbsp;</p> <object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="//www.youtube.com/v/ZhYajKR-b9o?hl=en_US&amp;version=3" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/ZhYajKR-b9o?hl=en_US&amp;version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object><object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="//www.youtube.com/v/QhJycApgUN0?hl=en_US&amp;version=3" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/QhJycApgUN0?hl=en_US&amp;version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-partner-text"> <div class="field-label">Partner Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Cirque du Soleil, Governments of: Ecuador, the Province of Azuay, and the City of Cuenca</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-contactinfo"> <div class="field-label">Contact Information:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/global/content/circo-cuenca">Circo Cuenca</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-source-text"> <div class="field-label">Source:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/redirect.cgi?r=http://www.ecuadortimes.net/2013/03/22/circo-social-debuta-hoy-en-cuenca/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Ecuador Times website</a> of March 22 2013, <a href="/redirect.cgi?r=http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/about/global-citizenship/social-circus.aspx" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Cirque du Soleil website</a>, and <a href="/redirect.cgi?r=https://es-la.facebook.com/circosocialcuenca?filter=1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Circo Cuenca Facebook website</a>, accessed March 7 2014.</p> </div> </div> </div> http://www.comminit.com/global/content/social-circus-and-inclusive-playground-circo-cuenca-ecuador#comments Ecuador Experiences Advocacy/Partnerships for Child Rights Featured Improved Physical Environments Children Community Participation Entertainment Live Performance Person-to-Person Community Groups Equity Entertainment Orgs Government Departments Global Children, Equity and Development Early Child Development Entertainment-Education Fri, 07 Mar 2014 15:25:56 +0000 jlevy 9312945 at http://www.comminit.com Nation against Early Marriage http://www.comminit.com/global/content/nation-against-early-marriage <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img src="http://www.comminit.com/global/files/imagecache/thumbnail/marriage.jpg" alt="" title="Nation against Early Marriage" width="78" height="100" class="imagecache imagecache-thumbnail imagecache-default imagecache-thumbnail_default"/> </div> </div> </div> <p><em>"In several communities of rural India, early marriage is the norm - a social practice followed as a tradition. The organisation conducted formative research and baseline studies across 3 districts in the states of Bihar and Jharkhand, looking at the causes and impact of early marriage and identifying the civil society partners they should work with to address the problem. Breakthrough spoke to fathers, mothers, community leaders, boys, and girls - who informed them about the context in which early marriage takes place. Drawing on this research, Breakthrough has set about tackling early marriage with a 3-pronged approach:</p> <ol> <li>Mass media campaigns to create awareness around early marriage and ignite public dialogue;</li> <li>Direct interaction through large-scale outreach campaigns to provide action points and generate discussion on the ground; and</li> <li>Training of influential community members to create local actors for social change.</li> </ol> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>To cite a specific example of one activity, the project has used the medium of the Theatre of the Oppressed, a theatrical form popularised in Brazil that encourages interactivity between the performers and the audience. The performance is paused at critical moments to bring the audience into discussions. It is used here as a way of helping parents and other key stakeholders to understand the impact of early marriage on girls and the wider community. The free-flowing structure of this theatre form helps young girls vocalise their concerns and talk openly about their experiences. The community outreach element also uses video vans to share messages about how girls and boys are raised in the family, why families marry off their daughters, why these aren't sound reasons, and how early marriage inhibits the rights and opportunities of girls.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Key strategies shaping all Nation against Early Marriage activities include:</p> <ul> <li>Reaching out specifically to men and boys as leaders of change, training them to be leaders in challenging early marriage and for change that supports human rights and well-being for all. "As we tried to create consensus within the family over early marriage, our message had to be empathetic in tone. It shows respect for the role played by fathers and their responsibility towards their daughters. We tell them that we understand that parents have their daughters' welfare in mind but that their decision to marry them off does not help their daughters in the long run. We tell fathers of the dangers for girls of early pregnancy and of their vulnerability to domestic violence. We meet fathers where they are, understanding the pressure on them to do what is expected, what is 'best,' and what is 'safe.' We invite them to see that early marriage is more dangerous to families and communities than any real or perceived threats to their 'honour.' We want girls to be not seen as risks or burdens, but as human beings with equal and intrinsic worth, agency, rights and potential."</li> <li>Focusing on gender and sexuality: "Interventions must include but go beyond increasing girls' access to schools and skills. They must position girls and young women as full human beings with intrinsic value and inalienable human rights. An approach that includes and addresses gender and sexuality stands to challenge norms, break taboos, and pinpoint the deepest roots of this practice, creating an environment for deep, sustainable change."</li> <li>Calling the problem "early marriage" (not "child marriage") in order to address and emphasise the full range and personhood of the young people affected by it.</li> </ul> <p><a href="/redirect.cgi?r=http://www.breakthrough.tv/earlymarriage/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Click here to access the Nation against Early Marriage website</a>, which includes interactive features such as a blog and various videos to view, including the one below.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-long-text-6"> <div class="field-label">Development Issues:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Girls, Gender, Rights</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-long-text-2"> <div class="field-label">Key Points:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Indian law says that marriage of a girl below 18 years of age is a crime. However, Breakthrough research revealed that the median age for marriage for girls in Bihar was 15.1 for respondents aged 20-49 and the median age of marriage for the same group in Jharkhand was 16.2.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>According to Breakthrough, globally, "between 2011 and 2020, if current rates hold, more than 140 million girls will marry before age 18. That translates to 14.2 million girls annually - or 39,000 every day. Of these, 50 million will be under the age of 15. That adds up to a serious global crisis. Early marriage is a profound violation of the human rights of girls. It also means an early, and devastating, start to a cascade of related human rights violations - threats to sexual, reproductive, and maternal health; domestic violence; denial of education, mobility, self-determination, and more - that last a lifetime and cost girls, families, communities, and nations inestimable human capital."</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-partner-text"> <div class="field-label">Partner Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Supported by the Oak Foundation, the Human Dignity Foundation (HDF), and the Ford Foundation</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-contactinfo"> <div class="field-label">Contact Information:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/global/content/urvashi-gandhi-breakthrough">Urvashi Gandhi - Breakthrough</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/global/node/265414">Sonali Khan - Breakthrough India</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-emvideo field-field-video"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="emvideo emvideo-video emvideo-youtube"><div id="media-youtube-2" class="media-youtube"> <div id="media-youtube-default-external-2"> <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" height="355" width="425" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/wARDb2JYfvw&amp;amp;rel=0&amp;amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;amp;playerapiid=ytplayer&amp;amp;fs=1" id="media-youtube-default-external-object-2"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wARDb2JYfvw&amp;amp;rel=0&amp;amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;amp;playerapiid=ytplayer&amp;amp;fs=1" /> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain"/> <param name="quality" value="best"/> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"/> <param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF"/> <param name="scale" value="noScale"/> <param name="salign" value="TL"/> <param name="FlashVars" value="playerMode=embedded" /> <param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> <!-- Fallback content --> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wARDb2JYfvw"><img src="http://img.youtube.com/vi/wARDb2JYfvw/0.jpg" alt="See video" title="See video" width="425" height="355" /></a> </object> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-source-text"> <div class="field-label">Source:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Email from Urvashi Gandhi to The Communication Initiative on September 9 2013; and <a href="/redirect.cgi?r=http://www.breakthrough.tv/earlymarriage/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Nation against Early Marriage website</a> and the <a href="/redirect.cgi?r=http://breakthrough.tv/explore/issue/early-marriage/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> Breakthrough website</a> - both accessed on March 5 2014.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.comminit.com/global/content/nation-against-early-marriage" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.comminit.com/global/content/nation-against-early-marriage#comments India Experiences 10 to 14 years 15 to 19 years Advocacy Digital Featured Gender and Adolescence Children Community Participation Film and Video Live Performance MDG 3.
