Yegna is led by Girl Hub Ethiopia, part of the Girl Hub initiative, a collaboration between the Department for International Development and the Nike Foundation, working to transform the lives of adolescent girls in Rwanda, Nigeria, and Ethiopia.

Communication Strategies:

Through the radio drama and talk show, and music, Yegna addresses issues such as economic empowerment, rights, violence against girls, forced marriage, teenage pregnancy, and school attendance. Each component uses female and male role models to contribute to shifting attitudes and behaviours towards girls.

Radio drama
The central media component of Yegna is the Yegna radio drama. The 30-minute radio drama features five girls from different backgrounds who come together through a shared love of music to form a band. The drama follows their individual stories and the problems they face at home, in school, and on the streets. The drama was created based on research that identified insights about girls in Ethiopia, translating these into storylines that map out realistic journeys of change that follow the stages people go through as their behaviour changes. These are as follows:

"Stage 1: Pre-contemplation - This is when the characters are living in the status quo and not even thinking about change. They might be in denial or just unaware of the need to change.

Stage 2: Contemplation - There is usually a trigger point or an incident that encourages them to move to this stage. This is when they start thinking about change.

Stage 3: Preparation - In the preparation stage the characters start actively talking about the issue and sharing information about it. They start looking for other people who have done the same thing.

Stage 4: Action - This is when they actually try the new behaviour. There's a character in Yegna called Mimi who's going to try setting up a business; we have another one called Sarah who is going to try talking to her parents about what's going on at school.

Stage 5: - Maintenance - This involves demonstrating that a character has been able to maintain a behaviour over a period of time."

The Yegna drama is designed to give girls positive role models. The Yegna drama also features positive male role models and illustrates healthy relationships between girls and boys. For instance, Manti, a lead male character in the show, is the Yegna group's number one fan. The drama also includes secondary characters, such as parents, teachers, and community and religious leaders, to demonstrate the important influence of the wider community on girls' empowerment.

Talk Show and Listening Groups
Each episode of the radio drama is followed by Yegna Sa'at, a half-hour talk show exploring issues raised in the radio drama through features, interviews, and audience interaction. Listening groups are also being set up with the goal of encouraging students at 200 schools to set up Yegna clubs to discuss issues raised by the drama. In addition, Yegna is working in partnership with the Amhara Women's Association to increase listenership in areas where radio ownership is low.

Yegna Music and Band
Each episode of the drama and talk show features music from the Yegna band, which has its own youthful sound, rooted in Ethiopian culture but with a modern twist. The all-girl band, which performs at concerts and road shows to promote the radio drama and further the girls' empowerment message, was launched in April 2013 and had its first concert in October 2013, marking International Day of the Girl. Promoters of the concert rode Yegna-decorated mules, three-wheeled bajajas, and motorbikes to remote areas around the two towns, focusing on schools, youth clubs, women's associations, and villages within a 5km radius of the events. Everyone was welcome, but, to attend, people needed to either be a girl or bring a girl. Since then, the band has regularly conducted road shows and performances in communities and schools.

Feedback mechanisms
People can interact with Yegna through the Yegna SMS [text messaging] line and the Yegna Facebook page. The production team also receives reports from listening group sessions to better understand audience reactions and to make adjustments to programming.

Development Issues:

Girls' Empowerment

Key Points:

Yegna is the flagship programme of Girl Hub Ethiopia, which is working with policymakers, donors, and partners in the private sector who can deliver large-scale programmes and ensure that girls are at the heart of the development agenda in Ethiopia.
