British born in 1942. I have 50 years of experience in communications research. I began in Tanzania in 1967 before moving to Zambia in 1970 where I carried out national audience research for the national broadcasting service. From 1973 I was a broadcaster at the BBC World Service before becoming their head of audience research from 1982 to 1998. AT the end of this period I created the BBC World Service’s first marketing unit before leaving to become a self-employed audience research consultant and practitioner. Since then I have run a wide ranging service of consultancy in audience research, running projects in many countries in Africa, Asia and Europe. I have also trained broadcasters and audience research staff in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe and continue to do this.

I have also written a book, published at first by UNESCO and UNICEF, Handbook on Radio and Television Audience Research, which was first published in 1993 with a second revised edition in 1999. It has been translated into French, Indonesian, Slovak, Russian and Lao. It has been substantially revised for a third edition published by Sage, India in 2016, with a new title Media Audience Research: A Guide for Professionals. The new edition covers all media including online, social media, and the Internet, both as media to be researched and also as media through which research is increasingly being carried out The new eition is co-authored by Peter Diem and Piet Hein van Dam. 2015 ongoing - Consultant to Oxford Research, a company specialising in globalmedia research.

2015 ongoing - Consultant to Sat7 TV in the Middle East, assisting them with the analysis of audience research data

2015 – Invited speaker at the 17th Annual Conference of the Pan African Media Research Organisation in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

2012 and 2013 - Trainer in audience research for TV and radio broadcasters in Tunisia and Algeria for BBC Media Action, the BBC World Service’s development arm.

2011 - Darfur, Sudan - Management and analysis of a representative quantitative research survey on media use (all media, domestic and international, broadcasting, online etc) carried out throughout Darfur, This was for Free Press Unlimited in the Netherlands which manages the radio service for Darfur, Radio Dabanga.

2011 - Pakistan Audience Research Consultant to PEPL (Popular Engagement Policy Lab) in communications project among FATA citizens. This work was done in Islamabad, training local participants to carry out both qualitative and quantitative research for broadcasting, social media, the press and other media.

2011 - Bangladesh Training and Consultancy for the Bangladesh Marketing & Social Research Society in Dhaka

2011 - Consultancy for the UN Mission to Timor Leste (East Timor) on the analysis of the 2010 national media survey, evaluating the performance of the research agency.

2010 - Consultancy for Fondation Hirondelle, Lausanne, for the management and reporting on qualitative research conducted in Khartoum prior to referendum which led to the independence of South Sudan.

2010 - Consultancy for HRT (Croatian public television company) in the better use of audience data for programming, planning, scheduling, promotion and marketing.

2010 - Training in Tirana, Albania for OSCE, for TV managers and schedulers learning how to use audience research data for marketing, scheduling and planning

2010 - Sierra Leone. Consultancy to Fondation Hirondelle, Lausanne, for the management and reporting for the second time of a national media access and use survey, taking place during March 2010.
