Resumen

Brandeis University is a private research university with a liberal arts focus. It characterises itself as: "a community of scholars and students united by their commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and its transmission from generation to generation. As a research university, Brandeis is dedicated to the advancement of the humanities, arts and social, natural and physical sciences. As a liberal arts college, Brandeis affirms the importance of a broad and critical education in enriching the lives of students and preparing them for full participation in a changing society, capable of promoting their own welfare, yet remaining deeply concerned about the welfare of others."

The Programs in Sustainable International Development at The Heller School of Brandeis University is, according to its website: "a community of concerned students and faculty drawn from around the world. Our mission is to help build a new generation of development planners and policy makers in the U.S. and abroad for whom a global society free of poverty, preventable disease, and environmental degradation is achievable. SID is a stimulating and supportive learning environment where the faculty, students and staff are culturally and professionally diverse with broadly varied academic and organizational backgrounds. It is a fertile setting where students who are experienced practitioners are exposed to innovative ideas, and those with little experience are prepared to enter the field."

Programmes

  1. Dual Master (MA) in Sustainable International Development (SID) and Coexistence and Conflict (COEX) - The Sustainable International Development (SID)/Coexistence and Conflict (COEX) dual degree option was created in response to the global demand for academic and professional training that addresses the overlap between development and coexistence work in societies in conflict. According to the university, an increasing number of governmental, intergovernmental, international, and local organisations working on development issues are establishing units within their planning structures to address the particular needs of programmes in conflict areas to ensure that their development work connects rather than divides societies.

Offered jointly by the Heller School for Social Policy and Management and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, SID courses provide an economic poverty and development context for understanding and responding to conflict situations, while COEX courses build an understanding of the structural and psychosocial causes of conflict and violence and allow students to effectively analyse strategies for interventions. Students who complete this programme will receive two MA degrees: one in Coexistence and Conflict, and the other in Sustainable International Development. The programme requires four semesters in residence at Brandeis followed by a field project that integrates knowledge from both fields of study.
