The NSJ Exchange Programme is for journalists, both print and broadcast, interested in learning from other media institutions within the Southern African region. The aim of the programme is to expose journalists to other media institutions in order to exchange expertise, skills, ideas and culture and establish a network of skilled journalists.

This programme also aims to offer participant’s access to different types of democracies and give them a better understanding of governance in the SADC region. Through this programme, the organisers hope that journalists will gain experience different from their own house styles and that they will be able to share this with their colleagues upon their return home.

Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Applications should include a:

• detailed curriculum vitae;
• letter from the employer (if not freelance);
• motivational essay stating why the applicant wants to attend the course of their choice;
• sample of applicant’s work.

Sending institutions are required to:

• nominate candidates to participate in the programme;
• indicate expectations;
• continue payment of staff salary while they are on the exchange programme.

Host institutions are required to:

• give orientation sessions to the exchange participant;
• provide adequate training facilities for the exchange participant;
• integrate and socialise the exchange programme participant into the work culture and ethics of the organisation;
• provide a supervisor/mentor/trainer where applicable;
• monitor the exchange participants performance;
• report to NSJ on performance of the exchange participant; and
• complete an NSJ Exchange Programme Evaluation Form.

Participants are expected to;

• identify their professional needs and expectations;
• be ready to learn or share skills;
• write and submit to NSJ weekly reports based on NSJ format;
• pay 45% of their travel costs to host institution; and
• be prepared to stay with a host family, where applicable.

NSJ will:

• advertise and contact interested institutions;
• develop the format for the supervisor’s and participant’s reports;
• provide logistical support by arranging host family accommodation;
• align training content to meet participant’s needs;
• follow-up on participant’s performance at the end of the programme;
• assess programme impact;
• pay per diem to the participant for his/her upkeep;
• pay local transport to the participant;
• refund to the participant 55% of the cost of return travel to the host country; and
• provide travel and medical insurance coverage.
