Resumen

CLASSworks is a programme that provides secondary schools in East Africa with information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure. It is a VI@frica foundation programme and it provides schools with fully functional computer rooms. The programme aims to stimulate the use of ICT in sub-Saharan Africa. It aims to achieve this by giving advice and information projects in consultation with local partners.

Estrategias de comunicación

The project aims to address three general problems in African secondary schools: inadequate infrastructure, limited material and laboratories, and a lack of qualified staff. The programme offers schools the possibility to tackle these problems and to be more able to prepare students for a job or higher education. According to the organisers, "CLASSworks offers a fully equipped network that the school can use as a tool to attain a number of goals."

The programme uses the computers for administrative tasks by providing teachers and school management with insight into how to develop individual students, to manage the financial situation of the school, and to store and reuse educational materials. It offers schools the use of a fully-equipped network.

The project uses the computer to support existing subjects and the school is given possibilities to access up-to-date educational material and modern teaching methods. The programme organiser VI@frica developed a clearinghouse of educational materials for secondary education that offers information to teachers, students and school management. According to the organisers, "teachers can easily and cheaply keep their information on the subject they teach up-to-date and expand it by using electronic sources."
