Resumen

The Association of Journalists Against AIDS in Tanzania (AJAAT) was formed by journalists concerned about the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country. The Association supports journalists who seek to deepen their journalistic expertise and knowledge about HIV/AIDS and the social, economic, and political factors that affect it. AJAAT'S mission is to contribute to the prevention, care, and control of HIV/AIDS in Tanzania by providing communication interventions to facilitate positive behaviour change toward reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS. It aims to give Tanzanian society access to correct information, facilities, and services related to HIV and also to empower Tanzanians to use these tools for their personal protection and the future of the nation.

Estrategias de comunicación

The Association works to:

  • Promote writing (newspapers/newsletters) and speaking (radio, TV programmes) about the already existing campaign to advocate for abstinence from sex and safe sex practices.
  • Encourage journalistic efforts to ensure behavioural change in order to contain the spread of HIV/AIDS.
  • Play a networking role to bring together journalists aspiring to join the worldwide campaign against HIV/AIDS.
  • Promote professional debate on matters related to HIV/AIDS.
  • Supplement publicity efforts by such organisations and institutions as the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), and other local and international groups and individuals working against HIV/AIDS.

Specifically, AJAAT has embarked on the following projects:

  • Training: Capacity building for its members on correct and accurate reporting of HIV/AIDS issues.
  • Website: AJAAT is planning to launch a website to help link up journalists covering or interested in HIV/AIDS issues. The website will also act as a venue for information sharing among journalists, physicians, scientists, researchers, policy makers, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs), faith-based organisation representatives, and social workers. One of the features will be an email forum (e-forum), where people will debate various issues regarding HIV/AIDS via email.
  • Newsletter: The Association's newsletter The CRUSADE against HIV/AIDS covers news, addresses issues, and includes articles on HIV/AIDS, with an emphasis on behavioural change among young adults.
  • Hope Productions: The Association is working to set up its own production unit for radio/television on HIV/AIDS programmes for local stations. These programmes will play a role in providing the public with information about the causes, spread, impact, and prevention of HIV/AIDS. In so doing, AJAAT hopes to provide the community with access to updated and accurate information on possible break-throughs for a vaccine or cure.
