Resumen

Sanaa Art Promotions (SAP) is an organisation of artists, researchers, social scientists, and communication specialists active in the use of arts to promote socio-economic development within East African communities. SAP provides leadership in the use of multi-dimensional communication strategies that are designed to empower people to use their own resources to meet development challenges specific to their own situation. SAP focusses on challenges in the areas of HIV/AIDS and health, education, governance, gender equity, corruption, environment degradation, family planning, and equality.

Estrategias de comunicación

SAP's stated guiding principles indicate commitment to the idea that people are most important resource and thus must be treated with respect, fairness, and dignity. In its work, SAP claims to value creativity and innovation, and to advocate and practise teamwork. SAP recognises other people's views, leadership, and empowerment.

Reflective of this philosophy is SAP's use of visual and theatre arts for communication through a method called Participatory Interactive Media Model (PIMM). The model is a strategy for advocating behaviour change, primarily among youth. On this model, participants take an active role in simulation exercises. PIMM challenges participants to figure out their own solutions to identified problems. The goal is to enable groups and communities to discover their own resources and innovative strategies to address socio-economic challenges from their own perspectives. The programme involves the implementation of interactive media processes, essay writing competitions, radio programme listening sessions, discussion forums, and performing and fine art outreach among communities.

SAP has used the PIMM model to address various issues. For instance, the model was used to address HIV/AIDS in a school- and community-based youth behaviour change intervention programme. Theatre, murals, debates, essay writing contests, and talk shows were used to develop messages and promote behaviour change. About 2,500 schools are involved in the programme, which is expected to run for 2 years in Nairobi, and the Eastern, Coastal and Central provinces.

SAP works with partners to implement its PIMM model in various communities. This strategy reflects a belief in sharing information, experiences, and results, and a commitment to forging a common front for responding to problems such as HIV/AIDS. SAP initiated a family planning campaign in conjunction with the Family Planning Association of Kenya and participants from the private sector. In addition, it has implemented environmental conservation intervention programmes for the Kenya Energy and Conservation Organisation (KENGO) and HIV/AIDS intervention projects for AMREF, USAID, Family Health International, and Programme for Appropriate Technology in Kenya (PATH) in their AIDSCAP and IMPACT programmes.
