The Fight Fistula! Campaign, initiated under the German Foundation for World Population's (DSW) Youth-to-Youth programme, intends to reach both men and women in East and West Gojam in Ethiopia. The project uses trained nurses and former fistula sufferers, who are trained as peer educators, to reach people in the region with reproductive health information and improved health facilities. The project involves home-to-home visits, peer-to-peer learning in youth clubs, and mass edutainment.

Programme Summary

The national Onelove Campaign in Swaziland, led by National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS (NERCHA) and rolled out through Lusweti Institute of Health and Development, seeks to reduce HIV prevalence by decreasing the number of people engaging in multiple concurrent partnerships (MCP). In order to discourage MCPs, the campaign aims to highlight the dangers of MCP, promote positive dating patterns and good relationships, encourage single partner relationships, build self efficacy by showing life examples of good relationships and positive dating patterns, and counter negative relationship role modeling prevalent in Swaziland. The 5-year campaign, which forms part of a larger Southern African regional Onelove campaign, was launched in March 2009 and will run until 2012. The campaign activities include television and radio talkshows, public service announcements, outdoor media, public dialogues, a media competition, and a business sector component.

Launched in July 2009, 100 Dúvidas (100 Doubts) is a BBC World Service Trust programme, produced in collaboration with Trocaire and Radio Ecclesia, which is designed to improve government accountability and give a voice to citizens in Angola. The project, which will run until January 2011, seeks to promote debate, discussions, and understanding between government authorities and citizens through an interactive weekly radio programme and the project website.

The Omaheke Health and Education Programme (OHEP), supported by Oxfam, worked in the sparsely populated area of Omaheke in Namibia to reach mainly the mobile San population. The community-based health initiative sought to decentralise tuberculosis (TB) control services by focusing on a primary health care system where outreach activities as well the active participation of the community were used to help treat TB patients, educate communities, and identify potential TB patients requiring treatment.

Programme Summary

The Safe from Harm Parent/Child Interpersonal Communication (IPC) Programme, initiated by Population Services International (PSI) and AIDSMark in 2005, is based on the fact that parent/child communication has been shown to be a key factor in delaying sexual activity and in reducing risky sexual behaviour amongst youth. Through training sessions, Safe from Harm intends to equip parents with the knowledge and skills to increase the amount and quality of in-home sex education and to provide adolescents with communication skills. The project, currently being implemented in Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, works with different organisations in each country to train interpersonal communication (IPC) facilitators to work with parents and youth. In so doing, Safe from Harm seeks to:

equip parents with knowledge and skills to talk to their children about reproductive health, HIV, and life in general;

give adolescents the opportunity to enhance life-skills and HIV risk perception;

provide parents and youth with a forum in which to build these skills; and

encourage adolescents to delay sexual debut and/or adopt other safer sexual behaviours.

Red Card is a health communication campaign that was designed to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and to curb associated risky behaviours by "letting girls call the shots" and sparking conversation between parents and adolescents. The Academy for Educational Development (AED) turned to the signal soccer referees use to kick aggressive players out of a game: a red card. As part of the C–Change programme, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), paper Red Cards were distributed to 1.5 million young women across Madagascar. The Red Cards are meant to be used as an ice breaker to start conversations on sensitive topics and to stop risky and inappropriate behaviours at school, parties, their homes, and on dates. A series of public service announcements (PSAs) was designed to raise awareness about the initiative, and the Red Card tool that is at its centre.

The programme, aired by Radio Sila 89.9 FM, focuses mainly on women’s health and rights issues. As part of the project, wind-up radios were distributed to women who were put in charge of the radio in order to ensure that the whole community, especially women, have access to radio.

Launched on November 2008 in South Africa, the Shukumisa (to stir and shake up) Campaign is a national initiative by the National Working Group on Sexual Offences which calls on the state to account for its responses to survivors of sexual violence. The project is a product of 26 organisations working with adult and child survivors of sexual violence to ensure that effective and appropriate laws around sexual offences are passed. The purpose of the Shukumisa campaign is to monitor the implementation of laws and policies relevant to sexual offences and hold service providers to account for ineffective implementation.

Information Dissemination Campaign on Domestic Violence

Programme Summary

In July 2007, Zimbabwe's International Video Fair Trust (IVFT) launched a campaign using mobile cinema, community dialogue, and printed information materials to highlight the problem of violence against women and to introduce the then-newly-passed national Domestic Violence Act. Funded by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Zimbabwe, the campaign sought to reach Zimbabweans in the country's four major cities (Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, and Masvingo) with information on the new Act, and to demonstrate the link between HIV/AIDS and domestic violence. The campaign's goals included:

improved community dialogue and action on social concerns such as HIV/AIDS, and violence against women;

improved community awareness and utilisation of services in areas such as legal advise, shelters for urgent help, and HIV testing, counselling, and treatment;

improved community outreach offering relevant services in the same areas as well as improved partnerships between legal resource centres and women's help organisations, as well as development agencies and communities; and

behaviour change on the part of perpetrators of domestic violence by informing them of what constitutes gender equality and positive gender relations, as well as the legal implications of domestic violence.

Learning about Living, a project that aims to use information and communication technologies (ICTs) to educate young people on issues around adolescent reproductive health, is running two information and advice services for young people in Nigeria called MyQuestion and MyAnswer. These services, launched in November 2007 by the United Kingdom (UK) charity OneWorld UK and Butterfly Works (NL) in collaboration with other key Nigerian health non-governmental organisations (NGOs), allow young people to request information on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS through short messaging system (SMS), by going online or by phoning a hotline. It also involves a competition which requires that young people answer a set question each month related to HIV/AIDS.

        Attendre Demain (Awaiting Tomorrow: HIV/AIDS in the Democratic Republic of the Congo) is an advocacy project that aims to use video to call to the Congolese government and other decision-makers to address the emerging HIV/AIDS crisis in the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The video was produced by WITNESS, a non-profit organisation that trains human rights defenders to use video as an advocacy tool, in partnership with the Association des Jeunes pour le Developpement Integre-Kalundu (AJEDI-Ka/PES), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that works with child soldiers and children affected by armed conflict.

        The Make Abuse Disappear Online Accountability Tool (MAD OAT) is a child-centred project that aims to raise awareness and improve the representation of child abuse in the South African media through the use of technology, a network of child abuse experts, and a reference group of children. The project, run by Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) (formerly "Media Monitoring Project", or MMP), uses a website application to alert members of the MAD OAT network to media reporting that infringes on children's rights and that requires a response. MAD OAT members then submit their responses, which are sent to the media and self-regulatory bodies. In addition, instances of best practice are highlighted and commented on by MAD OAT members.

Witness to Truth: A Video Report and Recommendations from the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission

Witness to Truth: A Video Report and Recommendations from the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission

Programme Summary

        As part of the peace and reconciliation process in Sierra Leone the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) considered it vital that the report emerging from the TRC process be conveyed to a broad variety of audiences, using as many different media as possible. For this reason the documentary “Witness to Truth” was produced to accompany the TRC report. The documentary summarises the key findings and recommendations of the TRC's report, highlighting the main causes and consequences of the war. It aims to raise public awareness of the TRC's peace-building efforts, encourage civil society in Sierra Leone and beyond and ensure that the government is held accountable for implementing the recommendations that form part of the TRC report. The video was produced by WITNESS, an organisation that uses the power of video to open the eyes of the world to human rights abuses.

Initiated ahead of the December 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference Copenhagen (COP15), Africa Talks Climate is a research and communication initiative of the BBC World Service Trust (WST), funded by the British Council. The initiative is designed to provide insight into the public's understanding of climate change in Africa, highlighting their concerns and experiences, in order to stimulate awareness of climate change and enhance political attention and action. The project is based on the idea that Africa's response to climate change is to some extent determined by how well it is understood by citizens and policymakers, and therefore the research seeks to inform and improve communication around this complex issue. In addition, the project's work to gather attitudes, opinions, and responses to climate change is designed to formulate advice for governments and society more widely.
