AWARDS [1]
1. Abraham Horwitz Award for Leadership in Inter-American Health
Recognises committed leaders and their contributions to public health resulting in region-wide improvements in the lives of the peoples of the Americas. Nominees must be individuals whose professional achievement in any field of inter-American health stimulates excellence, and has impacted the health of populations across the borders of the Americas.
Deadline: April 15 2005.
2. Essay Competition by World Bank
Focuses on youth and practical solutions for building a secure future in order to learn what the lack of a secure future really means to youth, to understand how they deal with this challenge in their daily life and to enlist their help in finding solutions. Participants must be between 18 and 25 years of age; students taking PhD courses are not eligible. First prize is USD $5,000 and runners-up receive USD $1,000.
Deadline: April 15 2005.
3. Young People Against AIDS! International Contest
Calls on young people to come up with a creative idea for a short film on HIV/AIDS. The best ideas will be adapted by professionals and turned into films by some of Africa's film directors. The contest is open to all young people who will be under the age of 25 on the deadline date.
Deadline: April 15 2005.
4. John Humphrey Freedom Award
Presented to an organisation or individual from any country or region of the world for exceptional achievement in the promotion of human rights and democratic development. The Award consists of CDN $25,000 and a speaking tour of Canadian cities to help increase awareness of the recipient's human rights work.
Deadline: April 15 2005.
5. Sister Cities International Young Artists Competition 2005
Please note: this award is available only to those youth within Sister Cities communities.
Uses artwork to promote peace, mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation. Young artists from around the world, ages 13 to 18, use their imagination to express their concept of the sister city mission through the competition's yearly theme. The theme for the 2005 Young Artists Competition is "Connecting Global Villages." Ten winners will be selected and awarded a cash prize. The winning artwork goes on a one-year tour, with the tour kicking off at the Sister Cities International Annual Conference in July 2005.
Deadline: April 29 2005.
6. A.H. Boerma Award
For journalists or groups of journalists from around the world who have helped focus public attention on food security and rural development in developing countries. Winners receive USD $10,000, a medal inscribed with their name and a personalised handcrafted scroll.
Deadline: April 30 2005.
7. Darroch Award for Excellence in Sexual and Reproductive Health Research
Recognises an emerging leader in the field of sexual and reproductive health, where scientific evidence is essential to guiding the policies and programmes of the future. Offered once every two years, the award includes a USD $2,500 prize. The first award will be made in October 2005.

Seeking Intern/Volunteer
Cape Town's Bush Radio is looking for an intern/volunteer willing to join them to, amongst other things, coordinate the implementation of an edutainment serial radio drama from the end of April for a period of at least three months. The successful candidate will have an academic background and/or experience in Media or Development studies and a strong interest in communications, youth issues and the performing arts.

8. Gender and Information & Communication Technology (GICT) Awards 2005
Focus is on ICT initiatives that promote women's economic empowerment as it relates to development. Two winners will be awarded for "Outstanding ICT Project for Women's Economic Empowerment". A cash prize of USD $8,000 will be given to each winner.
Deadline: April 30 2005.
9. Comic Contest on Tolerance
Open to young people aged between 15 and 20 from all European countries for comics or caricatures on tolerance. The winning entries will be exhibited in appropriate places in Rijeka.
Deadline: May 1 2005.
10. Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism
Recognises independent and professional reporting that sheds new light on controversial issues. Established in 2002, the contest will award two USD $5,000 prizes each year, one to a local reporter in a developing country or nation in transition, and the other to a freelance journalist covering international news.
Deadline: May 1 2005.
11. Images of Communication
For visual interpretation (photographs) of current communication issues. Entries may cover, but are not limited to, the following areas: media and people; media and development; communication and daily life. There will be one overall winner ($500), and prizes for three highly commended photographers ($200 each).

12. Changemakers Innovation Award: Ending Human Trafficking
For the most effective, innovative strategies for ending human trafficking. Submissions will be available online, in an attempt to "build an online community that 'open sources' solutions for tipping the balance toward ending human trafficking." Three winners will each receive USD $5,000.
Deadline: May 22 2005.
13. Arts and Millennium Development Goals [MDGs] Contest: "Vision 2015: Your Future"
A contest for youth all over the world that aims to further the creation and practice of any type and style of art in promoting the ideals of the MDGs - educating, inspiring, and encouraging citizens around the world in their efforts to hold key decision-makers accountable for the promises they made at the Millennium Summit.
Deadline: May 31 2005.
14. Reebok Human Rights Award
Recognises young activists who have made significant contributions to human rights causes through nonviolent means. Honorees, who are 30 years of age or younger and are nominated by individuals and organisations around the world, receive a $50,000 grant from the Reebok Human Rights Foundation to further their work.
Deadline: May 31 - annually.
15. Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism
Rewards journalism that uses new information ideas and technologies in innovative ways to involve people actively in critical public issues by showing as well as telling, by providing access to news and information that stirs their imagination and invites participation. There is a USD $10,000 Grand Prize and $5,000 in Special Distinction Awards.
Deadline: June 9 2005.
16. Frederic Bastiat Prize for Journalism
To encourage and reward writers whose published works promote free markets and free societies, and their supporting institutions. The prize (a total of USD $10,000) will be awarded to one or more authors.
Deadline: June 30 2005.
17. Transparency International 2005 Integrity Awards
Honours up to three individuals and/or organisations whose efforts have made a positive impact on curbing corruption. Award winners will be honoured November 11 2005.
Nominations accepted through: July 1 2005.
18. African Information Society Initiative (AISI) Media Awards
For African journalists and media institutions that are "promoting journalism which contributes to a better understanding of the information society in Africa." The winning entries will be disseminated internationally and honoured at the 2005 Highway Africa Conference, which will take place in September 2005 in Grahamstown, South Africa.
Deadline: July 31 2005/September 30 2005.

FELLOWSHIPS [6]
19. Public Health Fellowship Programme for Journalists
For African and Asian women journalists, this fellowship will provide an opportunity to receive on-the-job training with United States media companies. The fellowship requires fellows to conduct public health journalism projects in their home countries.
Deadline: April 15 2005.
20. Panos/Stop TB Media Fellowships
The Panos Global AIDS Programme and Stop TB Partnership invite print and photo journalists from India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Zambia, Ethiopia, Malawi and Haiti to apply for a fellowship to write/photograph issues around tuberculosis (TB), and TB & HIV/AIDS. Each fellowship will involve working closely with the two organisations and a panel of experts on TB and communication in TB and/or HIV/AIDS in the above countries. Fellowships will run from June to October 2005.
Deadline: May 2 2005.
21. ICTs and Development PhD Fellowships at Manchester
The University of Manchester is providing a set of graduate teaching fellowships which can be used to support PhD study in topics on ICTs (information and communication technologies) and socio-economic development.
Deadline: May 6 2005.
22. Framework Programs for Global Health
For up to three years of support for the creation of new, multidisciplinary programmes that will foster global health research and teaching within and between institutions. The goals of these programmes will be to encourage greater involvement of NIH-funded (National Institutes of Health - United States) researchers in global health, to facilitate greater collaboration and interactions among global health research and training programmes at domestic and foreign sites, to bring new participants into the global health discussion, and to engage the next generation of scientists and health workers to choose careers in global health. Estimated total programme funding is US $1,000,000.00.
Deadline: April 18 2005.
23. Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial Scholarship Fund 2005
This scholarship is for young journalists from Asia, Africa and Latin America to attend and report on the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The session begins in September 2005 in New York City.
Deadline: May 1 2005.
24. Steve Biko Scholarships
For training of South African and other journalists within the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ) in order to "develop a democratic culture of vigorous and independent journalism in Africa and to foster a stronger working relationship among African journalists."
Deadline: July - annually.
