Curtin University of Technology has over 31,000 students, including offshore and onshore international students and research students. The School of Humanities, Department of Social Sciences conveys coursework designed to foster the ability to think critically, to analyse, to understand, and to research in a wide variety of areas, as well as the ability to work as part of a team. The Social Sciences at Curtin provide preparation for work in national, international, and local government and non-governmental organisations, in travel and tourism, in land care, ecotourism, and agribusiness, in sports management, education, and in the corporate sector. The flexibility of programmes, including external units and online classes, allows students to design a programme of study for their individual needs and interests.

Programmes

1. Master of Arts in Community Development Practice and Social Policy - This degree includes the study of community development theories and practices informed by a diversity of critical theory. Students develop specialised knowledge in community development and explore the ‘use of self’ in professional practice, then undertake an exploration of working with various communities to understand the importance of context and communication. This course builds on the graduate diploma by providing an opportunity to complete an individual research or fieldwork project in regional areas, interstate, or overseas. Combining reflection on work in the field with an appreciation of a range of theoretical frameworks is intended to contribute to the ability to undertake critically reflective practice.
   
   Employment opportunities for graduates include the public sector agencies such as the Department for Community Development, Disability Services Commission, and Centrelink. Community development workers are also employed in non-government agencies, community groups, and in the private sector, including agencies providing family support services, youth services, community legal services, migrant services, and emergency housing.
