PROGRAMMES



1. "Human Channel of Communication" - India - is an initiative launched by the Danish Assistance
to the National Programme for Control of Blindness (DANPCB) in New Delhi. Volunteers from communities will be trained to interpret healthcare
information for less literate members of the community, and to provide guidance and support for those members in gaining

2. "Sexual Abuse of Children, Child Pornography and Paedophilia on the
Internet" - Global - on 18 & 19 January 1999, 300 child care and child
protection specialists, Internet specialists and service providers, media
practitioners, law enforcement agencies and government representatives met
at UNESCO Headquarters/Paris to consider ways of combating paedophilia and
child pornography on the Internet. The resulting action plan has been

3. Media Against Conflict (MAC) - Liberia - is a cooperation of newspaper
and radio editors to use media to promote peace, national reconciliation and
stability in Liberia. "Peace and Reconciliation Messages" are disseminated
on radio and in newspapers. MAC will also hold training workshops and
discussions with government officials on cooperation with the media in the
provision and dissemination of information regarding developments that have

4. ROOTS FM - Jamaica - is a community radio station, established and
operated by Mustard Seed Communities, on air since May 1998. Broadcasts 24
hours daily with "5 main programmes and a blend of educational - uplifting
and peace-oriented programming couched in a bed of positive local music."
Granting of a broadcasting license took 3 years of drawn out negotiations.

5. Partnerships for Networked Consumer Health Information - USA - will hold
special events to explore how communication technology can support consumers
and patients in a partner-based health system. At the Partnerships'
Technology Games, developers/vendors engage participants in hands-on
demonstrations of innovative web sites and interactive health communication

6. Safe Motherhood Perinatal Programme - Mali - is a new maternal health
programme powered by grassroots participation with a Rapid-Response
component. District hospitals and local health centres are linked by radio
communication and transportation. A community based monitoring system is
augmented by awareness campaigns to improve timely referrals for health

7. Controlling Population Growth - Global - "Global Intersections" (GI), an
internet-based news digest and information service of Population
Communications International, presents news, features and commentary on
population issues. World population will not stabilize until the middle of
the 21st century, presenting substantial challenges to all nations -
developed and developing. GI studies the social, economic, scientific, and
political factors contributing to spiraling population growth.

8. Journalism Prizes - India - proceeds of Sainath Palagummi's book,
"Everybody Loves A Good Drought" will launch India's first 2 journalism
prizes for rural and mofussil journalists. Prizes include 20,000 Rupees, a
tape recorder, and a camera for 2 people each year. Those selected will
each publish 10 reports on the problems of marginalised sections in their

11. The Community Networks Group is a research forum to examine the current
and future role of information infrastructure by and for communities. It
provides data and analyses to and from partnerships with equipment

materials regarding HIV/AIDS programming information and advocacy. Access to

14. The Africa Alive! Initiative is sponsoring a regional music event to
create mass awareness of the dangers of HIV/AIDS and to promote prevention.
