Community Reinforcement of An Entertainment-Education Intervention: Botswana and Zimbabwe

Summary

This presentation explored the use of community Reinforcement Activities (RAs) in two radio dramas, Makgabaneng in Botswana and Mopani Junction in Zimbabwe. The RAs were targeted a the following behaviours:


  • Safer sex
  • Use of services
  • Positive living
  • Treatment of opportunistic infections
  • Care and support


The types of RAs used were:

  • Road shows
  • Epilogues
  • Dear Thandi
  • Letter contests
  • Public listening spots
  • Listening and discussion groups (LDGs)

The purpose of the RAs was to enhance the impact of the Radio Serial Dramas themes at community and interpersonal levels. It assisted people in their effort to adopt risk-free behaviours concerning HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention.
