Abstract:

This project description provides the general framework within which the research project isevolving.The project ‘HIV/AIDS Communication and Prevention: A Health Communication Research Project 2001-2003' explores lessons learnt within the field of HIV/AIDS communication programming and seeks in particular to understand the particular strengths and weaknesses of edutainment as a communication strategy, with the South African media NGO ‘Soul City – Institute for Health and Development Communication' being the main case studied and parallel case studies being conducted in Vietnam and Burkina Faso. The project is interdisciplinary, with the participation of anthropologists, public health specialists and communication researchers. The case studies in Vietnam and Burkina Faso aim uncover the current state of HIV/AIDS communication programming in these countries, and to assess the possibilities of applying edutainment as part of the country's response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
