The Final Push to Eradicate Polio: Annual Meeting of the Advisory Group on Communication for Immunization and Polio Eradication (2004)Publication DateJune 9, 2004
SummaryHeld in New Delhi, India, this annual UNICEF meeting was dedicated to examining communication in the context of the final push to eradicate polio, ideally by December 31, 2004. Introductory sessions highlighted the current status of the eradication programme; the funding sources and related challenges; and provided an overall assessment of global communication programmes in support of polio eradication. Presentations were then made by communication experts from each of the six remaining countries in which polio is endemic (Pakistan, Nigeria, Niger, India, Afghanistan and Egypt). The presentations generally included a summary of the current epidemiological data, an overview of the communication strategies implemented to date, and then provided an outline of the proposed communication strategies to be implemented during the final eradication campaign. An external Peer Review Panel, comprised of independent communication consultants, (convened and chaired by The Communication Initiative) initiated the country post-presentation discussions and developed a series of recommendations, deliverables and time-lines which were summarised and presented in the last session of the meeting on Day 3.
