AED Seeks a Senior CMAM and Emergency Nutrition Specialist


PROJECT SUMMARY:
FANTA-2 works to improve nutrition and food security policies, strategies and programs through technical support to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and its partners, including host country governments, international organizations and NGO implementing partners. Focus areas for technical assistance include maternal and child health and nutrition, HIV and other infectious diseases, food security and livelihood strengthening, and emergency and reconstruction. FANTA-2 develops and adapts approaches to support the design and quality implementation of field programs, while building on field experience to improve and expand the evidence base, methods and global standards for nutrition and food security programming. The project, funded by USAID, is a five-year cooperative agreement.

 
POSITION SUMMARY:  
In collaboration with the Senior Emergency Nutrition Advisor and the Emergency Nutrition Specialist, the Senior Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) and Emergency Nutrition Specialist provides programmatic and technical support for USAID-supported activities in the assessment, prevention and management of severe and moderate acute malnutrition in development, emergency and HIV contexts. The Advisor will be responsible for promoting proven approaches and strategies related to the prevention and management of severe and moderate acute malnutrition; supporting improvements in the quality and local availability of appropriate therapeutic, supplementary and specialized food products; and strengthening problem assessment and performance reporting for emergency nutrition programs and CMAM programs. Technical assistance activities will also include refining guidance and tools for CMAM programs, designing and managing training and other capacity strengthening efforts for CMAM and emergency response, and participating in the design and implementation of assessments of CMAM programs and emergency nutrition intervention programs. The Senior CMAM and Emergency Nutrition Specialist will be based in Washington DC, with frequent travel to the field anticipated.

 
REQUIREMENTS:

  • Masters in one of the following or related fields: Nutrition and Public Health required
  • 7 year(s) of relevant experience required
  • At least nine years of relevant work experience, including a minimum seven years experience working in international emergency nutrition, management of acute malnutrition facility and community-based, food security, and/or health programs.
  • Knowledge of and experience in food security and nutrition programming, especially as conducted by PVOs and/or WFP, highly desirable.
  • Research/policy experience and demonstrated competency in maternal and child nutrition programs in developing countries.
  • Experience in program management or the provision of technical assistance to programs at the national and local levels.
  • Experience with USAID and PVO programs, including USAID’s emergency food aid programs and PVO and WFP food programs, highly desirable.
  • Ability to work in a team consisting of people with different technical backgrounds and with people with varying levels of technical training.
  • Ability to undertake problem analyses and organize diverse information in a systematic way while thinking creatively to propose approaches to improve program design, implementation and results reporting.
  • Ability to work with others to translate technical materials into practical tools and approaches and be able to communicate these options using print, electronic and presentation services.
  • Demonstrated managerial, leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to facilitate relationships and interact smoothly and effectively with clients and colleagues.
  • Superior presentation skills, both written and oral. Samples of writing will be required.
  • Facility with computing environments.
  • English fluency is essential and proficiency in French is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 30 percent of the time.
