The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a Communications Specialist for its Development and Outreach team in the HarvestPlus Program. This position is based in Washington, DC and is a one-year, fixed-term appointment, and is renewable depending on performance and funding. This position may require some travel.

Essential Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Implement HarvestPlus communication and development strategies
• Write articles for magazines and newsletters, briefs, press releases etc.
• Draft, develop and disseminate effective promotional and development products
• Write and update website content
• Prepare PowerPoint presentations and reports
• Implement social networking and other tools to improve program visibility
• Assist with conferences and events
• Develop and maintain communication related databases

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelors degree in Communications, International Development, or related field;
• Experience in communications or development preferably for an international organization;
• Ability to communicate complex research results in a concise and engaging fashion, in both verbal and written communication
• Good project management skills--ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks;
• Self-motivated, highly organized, and computer (Microsoft office) /web literate;
• Basic understanding of international development issues;
• Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams;
• Good interpersonal skills;
• Professional level of attention to detail and ability to multitask.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Masters degree in Journalism, Communications, International Affairs, International Development, or related field;
• Experience in agriculture or nutrition field desirable;
• Conversant with social networking tools;
• International experience, especially in Asia or Africa;
• Fluency in more than one language;
• Some desktop publishing software knowledge (eg PageMaker, InDesign)
