Anwar Jamal Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre (AJK MCRC)

Description
The AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia Millia Islamia University was established in 1982 by Anwar Jamal Kidwai, then Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. He later became the Chairman of the Centre. Among other things, Jamia is today primarily know for its mass communication courses. The AJK MCRC was set up in collaboration with York University, Toronto, Canada, and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
Programmes
- PhD in Mass Communication - The centre offers a PhD in various disciplines of Mass Communication for students and media professionals who would like to further their academic qualifications. Scholars interested in areas of media studies, journalism, cultural studies, film studies, and interdisciplinary work in relation to gender studies, humanities, media technology, radio, etc. can register for the PhD programme at the centre.
Candidates should have completed their post graduation (MA) in Mass Communication with a grade equivalent to 55% or an MA in any other subject with 55% marks and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience in the media.

- MA in Mass Communication - The graduates of MA in Mass Communication are expected to be media professionals with strong conceptual and technical skills who are ready to choose a diversity of career options in radio, photography, film, video, and TV production. The two-year intensive course imparts learning in technical and conceptual skills through both hands-on production work and theoretical academic work. Professional engagement of graduates includes contributing to various media institutions and industries as producers, directors, reporters, editors, camera persons, writers, independent film makers, teachers, scholars, designers, media practitioners, and installation artists. The course requires students to pass the final examination in two parts, held at the end of each academic year. The examination consists of written papers, media production, internal assessment (including professional performance), and live voice performance.

- MA in Convergent Journalism - In journalism, convergence is taking place at the levels of technology, media ownership, and the presentation and packaging of news. This two-year programme leading to a Master’s degree consists of integrated course of print, broadcast (radio and television), online, and photojournalism for the journalists of the future. The main objective of this course is to produce skilled and trained journalists, for all the four streams of journalism, who are committed to the issues of ethics, social relevance, and human rights. The syllabus of the course is designed to equip the students with the skills and knowledge necessary for a career in any of the above-mentioned streams of journalism as reporters, news writers, copy editors, and producers.

- Post Graduate Diploma in Development Communication - The one-year course attempts to create professional communicators who can make effective and strategic interventions in various development processes. To this end, the course intends to train students to understand the use and potential of traditional and contemporary media such as print, radio, video, and television, while educating them about the specific social issues of developing countries in general and in India, in particular. On completion of their course, the students are expected to find employment with developmental agencies, media, and governmental and non-governmental organisations as development communication strategists and media practitioners.
