Launched in 2006 in the United Kingdom, the Green Awards were set up to recognise and reward creative work that communicates the importance of corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, and ethical best practice in any sector and across any marketing discipline. The awards set out to illustrate the role that needs to be played by communications in informing people about green issues, products, and lifestyle choices, which the Green Awards showcase across 16 categories.

16 Categories include the following:

  • Green Public Sector Award
  • Green Charity Campaign Award

  • Best Green Campaigner Award
  • Best Green International Award
  • Best Green Integrated Award

  • Best Green Internal Award
  • Best Green Audio-Visual Award
  • Best Green Public Relations Campaign Award
  • Best Green Advertising Award
  • Best Green Radio Award
  • Best Green Website Award
  • Green Awards Grand Prix Award

For example, the Green Awards is accepting applications for the ‘Best Green International Campaign’ category. This category sets out to recognise the best global examples of companies or organisations communicating sustainability.  Entries will be accepted across any media platform or marketing discipline and can range in scope from a single execution to a campaign rolled out in one or more countries. United Kingdom companies can also enter this category for pan-European and international campaigns.

The Best Green International Campaign winner will be determined by a judging panel of international sustainability and creative professionals under the chairmanship of Satinder Bindra, Director of the Division of Communications and Public Information (DCPI), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Kenya. To reflect the idea and values of the Green Awards, the judging will take place remotely by video conference for this category where the judges are based around the world.

Campaigns will be judged on their originality and effectiveness in communicating on sustainability and environmental issues and the quality of execution. Evidence must also be given of the positive sustainable impact of the campaign in terms of environmental, social, and economic benefits. In return, winners of the 2009 awards are automatically eligible to enter the European Business Awards for the Environment, presented by the European Commission.
