Impact Data - Radio Barkeol
Context
Radio Barkeol was established to promote and support action on health and development issues, and in particular, to address guinea worm. The station covered 3,000 square kilometers, had 100 watt FM transmitter, and targeted 70,000 people. Half of the programmes were devoted to community issues (health, literacy, environment, economy, etc), with the remainder devoted to local music, news, radio games, and religious shows. The station ran from solar energy.
Other Impacts
- significant reduction in number of cases of guinea worm.
- increase in number of children fully immunised - five times more immunisation.
- 80% better understanding of how to prevent guinea worm.
