Event summary

The West Africa Peace-building Institute (WAPI), organised by the West Africa Network for Peace-building (WANEP), is a three-week training programme designed to strengthen the capacity of civil society-based peace building practitioners and institutions to promote the development of indigenous responses to conflict. WAPI is offering six courses, each designed to be interactive and participatory while blending theory and practice in the field of peace-building. During the three-week period, each week will have two 5-day courses running concurrently:

  • Theories and Practice of Peace-building
  • Facilitated Dialogue and Mediation
  • Women and Gender Mainstreaming in Peace-building
  • Youth and Peace Education
  • Human Security and Peace-building
  • Early Warning and Early Response

According to the organisers, WAPI was established to provide specialised, intensive, and culturally sensitive training in conflict transformation and peace-building to individuals, civil society organisations (CSOs), policymakers, and other relevant actors from West Africa and beyond. The objectives of WAPI are to:

  • develop action-oriented capacity for conflict transformation and peace-building;
  • increase the number of competent, informed, and active peace-building practitioners in West Africa and worldwide;
  • provide quality training in peace-building at a reduced cost;
  • develop context specific and indigenous models of conflict transformation and peace-building that can be integrated with existing models; and
  • bridge the gap between policy and practice in peace-building.
