Listener numbers account for about 86% of the local population, a probable regular listener audience of 92,500 people. When Radio Douentza went on-air in 1993, radio ownership in the area is estimated to have jumped by 140%.

Knowledge Shifts

Save the Children Fund studied knowledge about AIDS prevention in the whole Mopti region, and found that those exposed to the radio were much better informed about AIDS than other regions, 70% of those claimed radio as their main source of information.

Practices

Save the Children Fund estimates that wheras before Radio Douentza started broadcasting, only about 30% of the district's children were brought in for inoculation, that figure is now 50%, following discussions of its importance on the air. In terms of environmental management, after broadcasts which recommended marking and conserving naturally occurring trees, it was found that the number of farmers doing this increased from 6% to 43% in the sample. Literacy classes were attended by more villagers after radio announcement, with an increase in attendance of nearly 120%.
