Programme SummaryThe Centro Civitas is the centre of an alliance of organisations working with communication media on social and human rights issues through monitoring information transparency, gender and ethnic discrimination, and the situation of young children and adolescents. It was formed by the Institute of Interethnic studies (Instituto de Estudios Interétnicos) of the University of San Carlos (Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC) and the Institute of Linguistics and Education (el Instituto de Lingüística y Educación) and the Centre of Humanistic Studies for Society and the Person (el Centro de Estudios Humanísticos para la Sociedad y la Persona), both of the University Rafael Landivar (URL). Its areas of work include: communication, culture, and development. Its permanent projects include:
Communication StrategiesThe Centro Civitas alliance seeks to monitor media through analysing publications for transparency, gender bias, and racism. It works on quality of reporting on children, builds capacity of information sources and journalists, provides resources for journalists in more remote areas, including providing internet access, and supports communication media through the publication of a newsletter. It works within the networks of Agência de Notícias dos Direitos da Infância (ANDI). The functions of its projects are as follows:

Key PointsIn 2002, a group of journalists created the Asociación para el Desarrollo, Organización, Servicios y Estudios Socioeconómicos (Association for Development, Organisation, Service, and Socioeconomic Studies) which worked until 2007 to develop, among other functions, support mechanisms to study and analyse communication media, to build capacity of sources and journalists, and to participate in the structuring of media regulatory frameworks. In 2008, the organisation expanded to include the observatories, newspaper, and electronic portals in its mission.
