Countdown Nigeria

Summary

Published every two weeks by the World Health Organization (WHO) Nigeria, this e-newsletter is being produced to provide access to concise information about the ongoing efforts to interrupt Wild Polio Virus (WPV) transmission in Nigeria. The one-pager details recent activities undertaken in the fight against polio.

For instance, the second issue in February 2009 describes the Kano State Task Force on Immunization (KSTFI)'s efforts the previous month to mobilise religious and traditional leaders, local council chairmen, and senior health officials, as well as to disseminate information and educational materials. In what is known as the Gezawa Initiative, community-based film shows (Majigi) presented the dangers of polio to 59 villages in a systematic attempt to engage communities and overcome non-compliance.

Upcoming events are highlighted along with statistics - e.g., Nigeria's WPV count in infected states, compared to the same time the prior year.
