Start Date

February 23 2009

End Date

February 24 2009

Location

Johannesburg, South Africa

Event summary

Organised by the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ), this course is designed for radio reporters, producers, and freelance reporters planning to cover the South African national elections in 2009. The course hopes to create an enabling environment for radio reporters and producers to provide even platforms for the various parties and candidates.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • How do journalists prepare for reporting on the elections?
  • Which topics are relevant for voters?
  • How do journalists report on party programmes instead of just covering campaigning events?
  • What tips and tricks can journalists use in interviews to get direct answers?
  • According to organisers, after the course participants will:

  • be able to treat matters of public policy and political controversy with due accuracy and impartiality;
  • learn not to express an opinion on current affairs or matters of public policy other than broadcasting;
  • be able to guard against political parties seeking to influence editorial decision, or allow being used to campaign; and
  • be able to adequately coordinate the efforts of radio stations to educate the electorate on elections issues.
  • Click here for more information about the course on the IAJ website.
