Technology in Government in Africa (TIGA) Awards

Organised by The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Government of Finland, the third Technology in Government in Africa (TIGA) Awards are designed to recognise African Governments’ effective use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for public service delivery. The Awards recognise African Governments and institutions that are engaged in initiating, developing, and implementing ICTs for public service contributing to the development of the information society in Africa.

Entries can be made in the following categories:

  • Public service delivery to citizens/communities - This award recognises outstanding achievements by organisations or teams in developing and implementing innovative projects to improve online government service delivery (such as service application forms, tax payments, revenue collection, birth & death registration, other forms of Government eServices, etc.), with a specific focus on citizens or businesses as clients of government. The Prizes will be under three levels/sub-categories: national, provincial, and local.
  • Improved health services through the use of ICTs - This award recognises outstanding achievements by organisations or teams in developing and implementing innovative projects to improve online as well as Government eServices using other forms of health service delivery, with a specific focus on citizens as clients of government. The Prizes will be under three levels/sub-categories: national, provincial, and local.
  • Improved educational services through the use of ICTs - This category is organised in collaboration with the eLearning Africa Scholarship Trust. This award recognises outstanding achievements by organisations or teams in developing and implementing innovative projects to improve online as well as eServices using other forms of education service delivery, with a specific focus on citizens. The Prizes will be under two levels/sub-categories: public and private.
  • Public Private Partnership (PPP) in economic and financial eServices delivery - This award recognises outstanding achievements by organisations or teams in developing and implementing innovative projects to improve financial service delivery (such as customs, banks, insurance, trade facilitation, etc.), with a specific focus on citizens as clients of government. The Prizes will be under three levels/sub-categories: national, provincial, and local.

Deadline for applications is February 28 2011.

Applicants are required to submit a full description of the project under each category entered. In addition, a completed application form should accompany all entries. The project description should clearly illustrate the benefits to Government clients of the category entered based on the selection criteria including government effectiveness in terms of reducing costs, effective delivery of public services and improved accessibility to citizens, and fostering local talent and creating synergies between the private and public sectors.

Application forms and the description of the project should be submitted to the contacts below in English or French. Though the projects/initiatives can be in any language including local languages, the submissions should be translated into English or French.
