Programme Summary

Farm Radio Weekly (FRW) is a news and information service initiated by Farm Radio International (FRI). Through a newsletter and a website, FRW strives to provide rural radio organisations in sub-Saharan Africa with news and resources that help them meet the information needs of small-scale farmers and farming families.

Communication Strategies

Each newsletter contains a compilation of agricultural and rural development news, accompanied by other resources, such as ideas and links for further research into the issues, and information about upcoming events and training opportunities. FRW is delivered to e-mail inboxes every week and is also available on-line.

The FRW website is designed to be a place for broadcasters to share their thoughts and ideas about news and issues, tell others about events and training opportunities, and discuss best practices in rural radio broadcasting.

According to the organisers, FRW is designed to serve the needs of rural broadcasters and their listeners. They invite contributions in the form of articles for "News in Review", news about organisations, upcoming events and/or conferences, or any other content ideas that could be of interest to farming communities.

Key Points

Farm Radio International (FRI) is an Ottawa-based charitable organisation, founded in 1979, which was "built on Canada's history in farm radio to provide a unique international development programme." Their overall objective is poverty reduction and food security for smallholder farmers in low-income countries. To achieve this they support rural radio broadcasters serving the communication needs of farming women and men. According to FRI, their network is comprised of 300 radio organisations in 39 African countries. Members include radio stations, non-governmental organisations with radio programmes, and farmers' organisations that work with radio to serve their members.

By any civic, moral and legal yardsticks, the expansion of transnational/global knowledge and research should not be blocked/checked or spied by the administrative means. The new western technologies are being used to make an unwarranted ghetto between the developing and the developed world- a measure that is against all the fundamental norms/rights for which the Western/ governments/ civil societies do claim to be the defenders or champions.
