SAB Environmentalist and Environmental Journalists of The Year Awards 2008

Country

South Africa

Deadline Date

September 1, 2008

The South African Breweries (SAB) Environmentalist and Environmental Journalists of The Year Awards have been established to recognise South African environmentalists and journalists working to make a difference to the environment. The awards focus on the entire spectrum of “green” and “brown” environmental issues: green issues address natural or ecological matters, while brown issues focus more on cities and urban concerns, such as waste and air pollution.

The categories for the awards are:

  • Print and and internet (includes all newspapers, magazines, and websites, as well as photography)
  • Radio and television (includes all broadcast media as well as independent filmmakers and production houses)
  • The Nick Steele Memorial Award, which for the second year is being given to the Environmentalist of the Year

Each of the three awards carries a cash prize of R15, 000 and a trophy. Merit awards carry a prize of R2, 000 each.

Judging criteria for the print and internet awards and the radio and television awards:

  • The integrity of the work
  • The overall quality and impact of the work
  • Tailoring the work for the target audience
  • Relevance of the work
  • Style and use of language
  • Knowledge of environmental issues and factual accuracy
  • Originality and fluency
  • Firm but fair judgment

Judging criteria for the Nick Steele Memorial Award:

  • Making a difference to the environment
  • Leaving a legacy

All individuals are invited to submit their work or nominate others’ work, including editors, managers, colleagues, and the panel of judges themselves.

The awards will take place in Johannesburg on Wednesday, October 8 2008.
