Position Summary:

 

The Program Officer will work with the senior director, senior program officer, and other NED staff to develop and manage the NED’s Egypt grants program, develop the Endowment’s strategy for Egypt, set priorities, and monitor and evaluate projects. The position is based in Washington, DC.

 

Specific duties of the Program Officer will include:

 

  • Assessing grant proposals to present at quarterly NED board meetings.
  • Traveling to Egypt on a regular basis (a minimum of twice per year) to visit grantees and identify and work with potential new grantees.
  • Developing NED’s strategy and priorities for Egypt.
  • Tracking political and democratic developments in Egypt and the MENA region.
  • Monitoring and providing compliance assistance to existing grantees.
  • Attending relevant internal and external meetings.
  • Maintaining contacts with organizations and individuals working on Egypt.

 

Applicants should have the following qualifications:

 

  • A bachelor’s degree in international affairs, history, political science or related discipline is required, a master’s degree preferred.
  • Fluency in Arabic and excellent written and oral communications skills in English.
  • Minimum five years experience in democracy-related and nonprofit work.
  • Minimum of one year residency or travel experience in the Middle East and North Africa.
  • High degree of organization and initiative.
  • Office management and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of financial monitoring, reporting and program evaluation techniques.
