Community Based Avian Influenza Risk Reduction Program-Mekong RegionCountryBurma Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam RegionSouth East and East Asia Programme SummaryIn March 2007, CARE Cambodia launched a project to document and disseminate approaches for strengthening community- and local-level capacity to mitigate highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Communication StrategiesThis activity aims to reduce vulnerability to avian flu throughout the Mekong Region (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Burma) by increasing awareness, prevention, and outreach support at the community level. Specifically, CARE Cambodia is undertaking local awareness raising efforts, drawing largely on interpersonal communication. Capacity building sessions are held in an effort to share avian influenza information about human and animal health with government officials and community members. In addition, CARE is trialling a community-based model that is designed to enhance avian influenza surveillance, reporting, and response. Another strategy being explored is a community-based model for improving bio-security behaviours. Development IssuesHealth, Natural Resource Management. PartnersFunding provided by AusAid.
