Programme Summary

ShareIdeas is an online gathering place for sharing information and ideas on how mobile communication is being used to create positive social change. This web-based community is designed for teachers, health care professionals, environmentalists, development professionals, and others who are using mobile technology to strengthen educational opportunities, treat patients, build small businesses, prevent crime, and save endangered species. The site is facilitated by a team of ambassadors, and the Nokia Technology Institute (INdT) in Brazil, which is a non-profit research and development (R&D) centre.

Communication Strategies

This initiative draws on the use of a website to bring people around the world together who are using mobile technology to meet development goals. On the one hand, the web platform offers information; e.g., case studies from people around the world who are using cellular communications for social change. One may, for example, search or browse stories related to how this particular information and communication technology (ICT) has been draw upon to foster civic engagement, economic empowerment, educational access/achievement, environmental protection, health and safety, and humanitarian relief. Links to recent news about mobile activism are also featured, such as a report titled "Wireless Technology for Social Change: Trends in NGO [non-governmental organisation] Mobile Use" that explores the way wireless technology is transforming the way that advocacy, development, and relief organisations accomplish their institutional missions. The report's 11 case studies of groups active in the areas of public health, humanitarian assistance, and environmental conservation provide real-life examples of innovative use of mobile technology to meet development goals.

In addition, this is an interactive website. Those who participate in a free registration process may share ideas and experiences, such as how they have used mobile phones in a variety of ways to collect data from the field that can be used to inform the public, organisations, and policy-makers as they make decisions and respond. The ShareIdeas wiki is designed to enable people to share their successes – and challenges – in using mobile technology to contribute to the lives of others. An email form can be used to post a story to the site (in which case the editors will check it, contact the sender, and then add it to the web site; no registration required) or, for those familiar with wikis, it is possible to simply go to the appropriate category page and add a new page there.
