The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is an organization comprised of international development professionals – researchers, advocates and program managers – committed to the creation and sharing of the needed tools, approaches and techniques that will serve as catalysts for change for women worldwide. As a result of rapid growth, we currently seek a Senior Technical Specialist, GVR, to lead and manage ICRW's portfolio of work on gender, violence and rights. In particular, the primary role of the Senior Technical Specialist will be to develop, lead and manage a portfolio involving research on project interventions, technical assistance and policy advocacy that address the issues related to gender-based violence, domestic violence, the complex intersection of violence and HIV, sexuality and masculinities.

 

This position will serve as a senior member in the Health and Development Group and, in addition to leading conceptual development and fundraising for the Gender, Violence and Rights portfolio, will contribute to its integration within the Group’s broader portfolio of work on gender, health and development. This position is based in our headquarters office in Washington, DC, but will involve at least 25% travel to project locations and international development forums worldwide.

 


Key areas of responsibility include:

 

 

  • Project Management Lead: You will function as a project director, providing oversight on the design, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of multiple projects across the portfolio.
  • Senior Representative for ICRW in the Development Community: You will represent ICRW as senior subject-matter expert in the international development community, increasing the institution’s visibility and reach through reviewing for journals, publishing, speaking in relevant forums, representation of ICRW in the media; serving on coalitions and building advocacy, with a particular focus on combination approaches to address gender-based violence and related research themes.
  • Research Portfolio Growth and Development: You will ensure the continued growth and development of a research portfolio that focuses on links between gender-based violence, domestic violence and HIV, and that complements on-going research efforts and contributes to achieving the department’s overall strategic objective. You will work with team members to create a vision for a coherent program of research, and lead on the conceptualization, design, implementation and dissemination of project results.
  • Management and Leadership Role: You will provide leadership and mentoring to a staff of highly capable and self-directed junior researchers, helping to increase their capacity as development professionals. You will also be expected to assume high-visibility institutional roles such as standing committee participation and collaboration with other researchers across the organization.
  • Fundraising Management: You will use strong networking and negotiation skills and your proven track record of securing funding from USG (NIH, USAID, CDC) and European donors (e.g., DFID, SIDA, Dutch), private and corporate foundations, in order to identify, cultivate and sustain viable relationships with donors and other partners as well as communicate knowledgeably about project concepts, progress and impact.

 

Our ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (Public Health, Sociology, Social Demography, etc.). Candidates with Masters degrees will also be considered with commensurate experience. A minimum seven (7) years of post-doctoral experience (ten (10) years of post-Masters experience) conducting research and managing projects in developing countries is required, with demonstrated ability to translate research findings into policy and/or programming action. Broad knowledge of gender-based violence issues required, including proficiency with theory and concepts, ethical considerations and expertise in relevant tools and methodologies. Strong research skills are also required, to include knowledge of one or more of the following statistical software packages: SPSS, STATA, ATLAS TI, etc.
