Agriculture Reconstruction and Development Program for Iraq (ARDI) - Animal Health and Zoonetic Disease Awareness Program's Avian Influenza InitiativeCountryIraq RegionMiddle East Programme SummaryLaunched in October 2005, the Agriculture Reconstruction and Development Program for Iraq (ARDI) responded to the appearance of avian influenza by integrating interpersonal communication and printed materials into its larger effort to accomplish the following: revitalise agricultural production, stimulate income and employment generation through agro-enterprise and market development, nurture rural financial services, and rehabilitate the country's natural resource base. ARDI was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented in an initial 240 villages by Development Alternatives, Inc. (DAI). Communication StrategiesThis initiative was an effort to raise awareness and share information through a series of one-day workshops that shared information about how to decrease infection and transmission rates of zoonotic diseases in humans and animals - including (but not limited to) avian influenza. The avian flu segment of the workshop integrated details about how to recognise signs of infection in poultry, how to report suspected cases, and how to safely handle poultry to prevent infection. At the conclusion of each workshop, the teams distributed posters featuring information on preventing avian flu, which were posted in public places like schools and mosques to expand the reach of the message of the workshops. Then, in April 2006, ARDI hosted a conference that brought together members of the government, representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and international organisations, and poultry producers to build commitment to work towards a coordinated and strong national response to avian influenza. Development IssuesNatural Resource Management, Health. Key PointsAccording to organisers, for 8,000 years, the fertile land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers has yielded agricultural goods. However, after years of war and neglect, Iraq's farming system is in a dire state. To provide work and income to Iraq's rural population, ARDI worked to revitalise the area's agricultural sector through 4 components: agricultural production, agribusiness, rural financial services, and soil and water resources. A total of 4,824 participants, mostly women, attended the first round of the programme's avian-flu-focused workshops. Due to what organisers perceived to be "overwhelming positive feedback" from these workshops, ARDI initiated a second programme, which was launched in 480 villages in Dahuk and Sulaymaniyah, with the expectation of reaching 12,000 villagers.
