VOICE - Helping Street Children Write Their Future

Programme Summary:

VOICE is a voluntary organisation working for the welfare of street children in Mumbai, India, by educating them. VOICE's mission is to "reach out to vulnerable and neglected street children and, through education, enable them become whole human beings and self-reliant, responsible, contributing citizens."

Communication Strategies:

VOICE uses interpersonal interactions and school curricula as tools to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic - using both English and Hindi - to children who may otherwise be deprived of an education. In addition, VOICE focuses on vocational skills such as tailoring, painting, making stationery, screen-printing, and computer literacy. VOICE also carries out small money-generating activities for the children like making 'diyas' (earthen lamps) during Diwali, and making wrapping paper, paper bags, and greeting cards. The children are paid for the work they do, and are taught to save their money.

The use of entertainment features prominently in this effort to make learning appealing. Organisers say that "[t]he educational process is made fun through the inclusion of songs, games, stories, and even dramatics." In an effort to broaden these children's horizons, they are taken on field trips that are designed to foster a sense of family and togetherness, apart from being educational.

Organisers also connect with parents and relatives of these children in an effort to make change. When they sense that these adults are reluctant to allow their children to stop begging or give up their money-generating work, they go to railway stations and informally talk to them, share their concerns, and over time, try to gain their confidence.

Development Issues:

Children, Education, Economic Development.

Key Points:

According to VOICE, there are approximately 250,000 street children in Mumbai alone. These children sustain themselves through ragpicking, scavenging garbage, polishing shoes, selling drugs, and/or begging. VOICE stresses that "This type of exploitative life produces such negative effects as stunted growth, increased susceptibility to disease, and psychological scarring. This work also deprives the children of an education that will allow them the mental growth necessary to escape this degradation."
