1. The Geotourism Challenge: Celebrating Places/Changing Lives
Seeks innovations that use tourism to help sustain, enhance, or preserve local culture and environment. The goal of the Geotourism Challenge is to identify and showcase innovators - individuals and organisations - that support the approach known as geotourism: tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place - its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. The competition was launched on Changemakers.net where the sponsors collect the solutions of geotourism innovators and ask that they be debated and improved upon by all who are interested in accessing the website.

2. Freedom to Publish Award
Honours a person or organisation anywhere in the world that has made an important contribution to the defence and promotion of the right to freely publish. Publishers and non-governmental organisations working in defence of free expression are invited to nominate candidates for the 2007 International Publishers' Association (IPA) Freedom to Publish Award. The winner of the award receives a cheque for CHF5,000, approximately EU€3,000. The 2008 IPA Freedom to Publish Prize will be given in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on September 18 2008 during the opening ceremony of the International Seminar on Neo-censorship (Sept 18-20 2008).

3. World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) Video Contest
Invites entrants to create a one-minute video that shows how breastfeeding mothers can be supported and reflects the WBW theme "Mother Support: Going for the Gold" for the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) Video Contest. The video can have sound and music and be in any language (with an accompanying English translation). 5 winning videos will be awarded US$200 each.

4. 2008 International Children's Day of Broadcasting
Honours programming that allows youth the opportunity to speak up and be heard. Programmes should be for young people and created with some aspect of youth participation. To be eligible for the ICDB Award, broadcasts must have taken place on or around Sunday, December 9 2007, and should be for young people and created with some aspect of youth participation.

5. World of Children Health, Humanitarian, and Youth Leadership Awards
Recognises and brings acclaim to outstanding children's advocates and the work they do, as well as to raise public awareness about the issues affecting the world's children through a humanitarian award, a health award, and two founder's awards for youth. The Humanitarian Award recognises an individual who has made a significant lifetime contribution to children in the areas of social services, education, or humanitarian services. The Health Award recognises an individual who has made a significant lifetime contribution to children in the fields of health, medicine, or the sciences. The Founders Award recognises youth that are making extraordinary contributions to the lives of other children.

6. WACC Photo Competition 2008
Honours photographs that capture women communicating and women's communication rights in action, or photographs illustrating how women use communication to empower themselves. Organised by the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC), the theme of this annual photography competition is 'Women's Communication Rights'. The competition is open to men, women, and children, of all ages and from all countries. Each entrant may submit an unlimited number of photographs, but no entrant may win more than one prize in the contest.

7. The Guardian International Development Journalism Competition
Invites new voices in journalism who are writing about issues facing the developing world today - issues that are often overlooked or under-represented by the media. There are two strands of entry into this competition. One is for professional freelance journalists (people who have been published before - excluding student journalists - who are not employees of media organisations). The other is for anyone who is not a professional journalist, including amateurs and students.

8. ABU-MAE Project Awards
Provides project funding of US$1,000 to promote the production of HIV/AIDS programming in the Asia-Pacific region. These awards, offered by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and the Global Media AIDS Initiative (GMAI), place emphasis on the creation of news feature items, public service announcements, and longer format programming on HIV/AIDS protection, education, prevention, and stigma and discrimination issues faced by people living with HIV/AIDS.

9. WASH Media Awards
Recognising print, electronic, and broadcast media journalism on water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) issues from journalists in developing countries with the intention of encouraging broader media coverage of, and increased awareness about, these issues. The WASH Media Awards will be awarded in each of three competition languages - English, French, and Spanish - with an additional prize awarded for the best entry that deals specifically with issues related to gender and water, sanitation, or hygiene.

10. International ReSource Award for Sustainable Watershed Management 2009
Recognises the planning, evaluation, and implementation of water-related projects with the aim of promoting awareness and encouraging the efficient use of this resource. The International ReSource Award is worth US$150,000 in total and is granted to one or several projects selected by an international jury. Launched in 2002, the ReSource Award is a prize for leadership in implementing the principles of sustainability in watershed management, awarded exclusively for project implementation activities and not for building-up or strengthening the organisations that are submitting an application.

11. Festival VidéEau "Water, People, and Sustainable Development" Film Awards
Invites young people worldwide, aged 17-30, to submit video clips, 90-seconds maximum in length, on the theme "Water, People, and Sustainable Development". The competition is intended to be an opportunity for young people to tell the world how their history, culture, and daily lives are closely linked to water. The winners of the competition will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held during the World Youth Congress, taking place in Quebec City, Canada, from August 10-21 2008.

12. Fred L. Soper Award for Excellence in Health Literature
Recognises significant contributions to the health literature in Latin America and the Caribbean and to promote the highest standards of research (specifically, research that emphasises regional impact). Only articles published in scientific journals listed in the Index Medicus or in official Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) journals are eligible for consideration. Preference is given to studies involving more than one discipline and to papers related to infectious disease, a life-long concern of Dr. Soper.

13. 11th Annual International Peace Pals Art Competition and Exhibition
Invites children throughout the world between the ages of 5 and 15 to participate in The 11th Annual International Peace Pals Art Competition and Exhibition. Entries are divided into 4 age categories for the awarding of prizes: 5-8 years, 9-12 years, 13-15 years, and 16-19 years of age. The competition's theme is 'Friendship'. Pictures should include the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth".

14. Child Rights Award 2008
Invites Asia-Pacific broadcasters and producers to submit entries for the Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award 2008. Televised programmes both for children and about children are eligible and can cover any child rights issue. Entries can include documentaries that detail the plight of children, dramas that help break down stereotypes and discrimination, or animation that teaches and entertains. Entries must have been broadcast between June 2007 and May 2008. The award will be presented at the CASBAA convention in Bali on November 24 2008.

15. The Clarence Moore Award for Voluntary Service
Recognises the benefits that the voluntary/non-governmental sector contributes to the public health mission and to improving the lives of the peoples of the Americas. This award calls attention to the achievements of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) located in Latin America and the Caribbean in public health, and celebrates these achievements. The award is presented at a ceremony organised by the PAHO/WHO Office in the winner's country, and coordinated with the Ministry of Health or other appropriate national institutions.

16. Transparency International Integrity Award
Honours individuals and organisations that have demonstrated exceptional courage and outstanding leadership in fighting corruption. The 3 awards recognise individuals and organisations from around the world that have risked their lives and their livelihoods - in the name of justice, transparency, and integrity - to unmask corruption and challenge people and institutions that wield enormous power. Nominations may be made by any persons or organisations at any time in accordance with the provision of the rules.

17. Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting Travel Grants
Funds international travel costs associated with reporting projects on topics and regions of global importance, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the mainstream American media. Journalists of any nationality on staff at print or broadcast outlets as well as freelancers are eligible for support, so long as their proposed projects include a credible plan for distribution in the American mainstream media.

18. Dag Hammarskjöld Fellowships for Journalists 2008
Awards fellowships to mid-career journalists in radio, television, print, and web. The journalists must be aged 25 to 35, from developing countries, who are interested in coming to New York, United States, to report on international affairs during the 63rd session of the United Nations General Assembly. The fellowships will begin in mid-September and extend to late November and will include the cost of travel and accommodations in New York, as well as a per diem allowance.

19. 2008 PAHEF Grants Program
Invites Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) technical units and country offices/centres, recognised non-governmental organisations (NGOs), universities, semi-autonomous government laboratories, research centres, and other nonprofit organisations in Latin America and the Caribbean to apply for 1- or 2-year project grants in the US$5,000 to US$25,000 range. The Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) is offering its 2008 PAHEF Grants Program (PGP) to support innovative, results-oriented projects in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2 priority areas: promoting healthy ageing and combatting childhood obesity/improving nutrition.

20. International Journalism Exchange
Invites 10 newspaper editors to the United States (US) for a 5-week programme, the core of which is 4 weeks at a US newspaper. The visiting editors have opportunities to meet editors during a week-long visit to Washington, DC, and then to observe all aspects of producing a newspaper and managing a newsroom during a month-long stay with a newspaper; and they are invited to exchange ideas and information with the host newsroom staff and local community. The goals of this programme are to strengthen the independent press abroad and to enhance US understanding of other cultures and journalism around the world.

21. Rotary World Peace Fellowships (RWPF) 2009-11
Calls for applications for the 2009-11 Rotary World Peace Fellowships (RWPF). The Rotary Centers for International Studies programme offers fellowships for Master's degree study in fields related to peace and conflict resolution. Up to 60 Rotary World Peace Fellows each year enroll in the 6 Rotary Centers based at 7 universities in 5 countries: Japan; Argentina; United Kingdom; Australia; and California and North Carolina, US.

22. Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies (RPCS): January and June 2009
Invites applications for the January and June 2009 Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies (RPCS) Program sessions. The RPCS Program was established to provide professionals from around the world with the opportunity to be trained in conflict resolution and mediation strategies. The RPCS Program is a 3-month professional development programme for up to 30 participants, housed at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.
