Course Description

This course has been developed at a time when “conflict sensitivity” has become an important aspect of the work of development and humanitarian programmes. The course examines conflict sensitivity from a transformative perspective and explores the dynamic relationship between development and humanitarian interventions and conflict. It raises the key issues that need to be taken into consideration in developing a transformative approach and offers ways to design programmes that foster peacebuilding even in the midst of violence.

Course Aims

This course will expand the knowledge and understanding of the concepts of conflict sensitivity and identify its limitations and its potential. It will identify ways in which conflict sensitivity can be further developed to ensure a conflict transformative approach.

Course Objectives

Participants will:

  • Clarify the relationship between development and humanitarian interventions and peacebuilding
  • Increase knowledge and understanding of conflict sensitivity as it relates to conflict transformation
  • Develop skills in conflict and peace analysis through applying a range of tools
  • Apply a conflict transformative perspective to programme design and implementation
  • Enhance understanding of the intended and unintended impact of development and relief programmes
  • Identify the organisational implications of conflict transformative programming.

This is an introductory course for development, relief and humanitarian aid workers, both new and experienced.
