This Behaviour Change and Communication in HIV/AIDS course, offered by the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) intends to:

• Assist a diverse audience of health and health related professionals in public, private, and community sectors.
• Develop skills and strategies to prevent or reduce behaviours that place persons at risk for STD or HIV infections.

The course aims to enable trainees to be able to:

1. Describe behaviour change and behavioural theories and frameworks
2. Analyse behaviour in context: the cultural, social, political and economic factors underlying health behaviour and behaviour change
3. Analyse behavioural aspects of health problems, the context, and target groups
4. Select most appropriate means of communication and media, and design messages and materials based on research and analysis
5. Describe all the stages of production and use of communication materials for BCC from conception and development, to pre-testing, planning of use, and implementation, to monitoring and evaluation
6. Apply the strategic use of interpersonal communication approaches and their role in inducing behaviour change
7. Plan BCC strategies for the improvement of health of targeted population groups
