Event summary

The theme of the 2008 Senior Journalists Seminar is "Building Understanding Between the United States and the Asian Muslim World." This seminar offers senior journalists from the United States and Asian countries with substantial Muslim populations (specifically Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand) an opportunity to dialogue, travel, and exchange on issues in the relationship between these Asian countries and the United States. The seminar includes:

 

Study Tour for Asian Journalists: Washington, DC; New York City; Colorado Springs, Colorado (The program opens and concludes in Honolulu, Hawaii, for joint sessions between Asian and American participants.)

 

Study Tour for American Journalists: Kolkata (Calcutta), India; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (The program opens and concludes in Honolulu, Hawaii, for joint sessions between Asian and American participants.)

 

Who Can Apply: Working print, broadcast and online journalists from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the United States

 

Application Deadline: January 31, 2008

 

Funding: Roundtrip airfare for the study tour, lodging, and per diem are provided by the East-West Center. Selected participants are responsible for their own visa fees and roundtrip airfare from their home city to Honolulu, where the study tour opens and concludes.

 

Application Guidelines: To apply for the 2008 Senior Journalists Seminar please submit the following:

  • Current resume or curriculum vitae including full contact details (Maximum 2 pages)
  • Cover letter outlining specific issues of interest and goals you would expect to accomplish if selected for the program
  • Letter of Recommendation from your editor or supervisor
  • Writing sample (not to exceed 1000 words). This could be a previously published article related to the seminar theme (non-English language pieces need to be accompanied by an English translation) or an essay specially written for the application addressing the seminar theme of relationships between the United States and the Asian Muslim world.

 

All materials must be received at the East-West Center by January 31 2008. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Fellows will be selected through a competitive process of applications, nominations, and invitations.
