Summary

This publication from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), United Kingdom, is intended to support public understanding of biotechnology and biological sciences by enhancing public access to the processes of science, to the results of research, and to the scientists themselves. It is designed to give presenters in the public understanding of science programme (PUS) and others the communication tools to promote public awareness, appreciation, and understanding of scientific information with a view to improving public confidence and stimulating open public debate about science and technology.


Each section supports identifying the audience and the approaches that are appropriate, dealing with controversial and sensitive issues, working with the media, and holding public exhibits, meetings, and school events. The document concludes with BBSRC resources in the categories of publications, school resources, and exhibitions, contacts for BBSRC public affairs staff.
