Administered by the Global Health Council, this award is given each year to a journalist (print, electronic, and/or visual) who has in the prior year most effectively captured the essence of a major issue in global health and conveyed it to a broad audience. The Global Health Council recognises the vital role played by the media in informing the public and decision-makers, and seeks through this award to highlight the important contributions to understanding and action made by the winner of the award.

The submission categories are:

1. Newspaper, Magazine, and Major Print Publication (for example, the N.Y. Times, the New Yorker, the Economist, TIME Magazine, the London Times).
2. Broadcast, TV, and "New Media" (video, mixed media, radio, and internet-based).
3. Photojournalism.
4. Community Media (community, local, in-country media of all types (newspaper, community radio, and internet-based), particularly from developing countries. Major news organisations or companies are not eligible.)

Nomination criteria are:

• Entries may be made by any individual or organisation from material appearing in print or electronic media.
• Entries may be made by United States (US)-based and non-US-based individuals or organisations. 
• Entries may be submitted in writing or electronically with a nomination letter. 
• Eligible works must have been published or aired between February 1 2009 and January 30 2010.
• Submissions must be in English.
• Previous winners are eligible for entry.
• Selection of the awardee is based on the quality of the reporting and its wide reach among readers and viewers

The award will be presented in Washington, DC, US, at a special awards ceremony during the Global Health Council's annual international conference.
